The vivid colors of autumn have always appealed to me. On an overcast,
windy autumn afternoon I found many red maple leaves scattered on the
ground, some of them in a stage of decay and others too dry and
lifeless to be photographed.
I picked a deep-red specimen and placed it on the leaves of a nearby
plant, moistened it with an atomizer and set up for the photograph. It
was hours later before I managed this photo because of the endless
struggle with the wind, a short, unstable tripod and a scene that
required a degree of precision to get the correct elements in focus.
All the effort was worthwhile however. The combination of red and green
is instantly attractive, and the shallow depth of field meant that some
areas of the setup became patches of attractive bokeh. The contrast of
the colors against a very dark background adds a little more interest.
