Isildur
The one trait that struck me regarding Isildur is his arrogance, the pride that led to his downfall. I found it representative of the ‘period’ he existed. It is this weakness, this haughtiness that I sought to capture and to make the distinguishing personality of the piece.
Isildur is a 6” scale action figure based on the character from the movie LOTR. It has 16 points of articulation and is quite faithful to the original design--it even includes the detail of the character being left-handed. There are still some parts which have no available references (such as the design of the boots) and these areas are considered works in progress. The high points in sculpting this piece:
- working on the chain mail, as I’ve never sculpted one before. It had to be unique and still be consistent with existing designs;
- sculpting the likeness, which is always enjoyable;
- making the details on the armour. The details I put are basically the ones you see in this illustration;
- designing the pauldron, or shoulder armour, so that it 'floats'. Most designs restrict arm movement, so I developed a system that would not hinder the articulation.
It’s a challenging piece and I’m quite pleased with the result. Now if I could just find that boot design...
