On sunny days, dozens of hoverflies descend upon the bushes and flowers in our small front yard, together with bees and other small insects. Lynx spiders position themselves on flower petals and wait patiently, hoping to catch a meal for the week.
Occasionally, I have witnessed their triumphant success. But most of the time I see the spiders sunbathing for hours without being able to snare a single insect.
The hoverfly is said to be one of the easiest insects to photograph in flight. Like the name suggests, it may remain suspended in a single spot for seconds at a time. However they are difficult to approach because hoverflies are very alert insects. A little patience usually pays off. But like the spiders, I've largely been unsuccessful at capturing these insects...in this case, on film.
