Chapter 1: Concussion

Darkness slowly became fuzzy light and color as Leon opened his eyes.
There was movement in the fuzz, and Leon thought he might hear
voices, but his ears were ringing so loudly that he couldn't be
entirely certain. He closed his eyes, on the verge of passing out
again, when something cold was pressed against his lips and bitter
liquid was poured down his throat.

He choked on the nasty high-potion and started coughing, but the
ringing stopped almost immediately. Still gasping for air, he tried
to blink enough tears out of his eyes to be able to see.

"Leon? Hey! You okay kid?"

Leon's eyes focused on Cid's scruffy face. A worried frown wrinkled
the older man's forehead as he peered down at Leon from that dizzying
upside-down angle that usually means that your head is resting on
somebody's lap. His blond head was effectively blocking the sharp
rays of the sun that always shone down at the Coliseum.

"Wha?"

"You got hit on the head. You've been out for a while. But you should
be okay once the high-potion's done it's job."

Leon sighed and closed his eyes again as Cid slid strong but gentle
fingers into his hair, touching a sore spot just above his left
temple. He could hear the murmuring of the crowd, hundreds of people
that had come to watch the games, and realized with sudden
embarrassment that he was laying on the arena, right beside the
fighting square where everyone could see him. He raised himself up
on his elbows in an attempt to get up, to get away from the
embarrassing position he was in, but a wave of dizziness swept over
him, closely followed by extreme nausea. His arms gave out under his
weight and he braced himself for the impact of sore head and ground.
But then Cid's strong hands were under his shoulders, supporting him
and carefully lowering Leon's head back onto his lap. Leon groaned
piteously, desperately fighting the urge to vomit, only dimly aware
of Cid's voice asking him if he was all right.

"Wow, he really clocked you! Heh, I think you're slipping after all,
Squall!"

The groan that escaped Leon's throat at the sound of Yuffie's voice
was a tired and frustrated one. He opened his mouth to correct her
with his usual "that's Leon", but quickly snapped it shut when
another wave of nausea hit him. He closed his eyes and brought a hand
to his face to stroke the old scar between his eyebrows as Yuffie
happily chattered on, her voice cutting painfully into Leon's head.

"Yeah, that Sephiroth guy is really scary, right Cid? But he looked
real surprised when you went down Leon. I think it was an accident.
He had just made one of his teleportation moves and hit you with the
hilt of his sword when he turned to face you. You should have seen
him! He just stood there and blinked down at you for the longest
time! If you hadn't looked dead I would have doubled over laughing!"

"Yuffie."

"Yes, Cid?"

"Shut up."

Leon couldn't stop the tiny smile that tugged at the corners of his
mouth. Even with his eyes closed he could see Yuffie's frowning face,
that childish pout fixing itself firmly in place as she placed her
hands on her hips, huffing indignantly. Still a child in so many
ways, and yet sometimes more mature than people twice her age. Not
often, and Leon couldn't really bring any of those rare moments of
maturity to mind, but he knew it had happened.

Tired, he let the hand fall away from his face, silently wondering
why his head didn't stop spinning. He wanted to get up, but right now
he didn't think he had the energy to even roll onto his side. A cool
little hand, very different from Cid's big, warm ones, startled him
slightly as it touched his forehead. He cracked open an eyelid and
peered up at Yuffie who had crouched down beside him, worry looking
strangely out of place on her normally smiling face.

"You okay?"

Leon gave her the closest thing to a reassuring smile he could
manage, knowing it wouldn't fool her, but hoping it would at least
chase that annoyingly worried frown from her face. And Yuffie, never
one to resist a smile, didn't disappoint him.

Then he had to close his eyes again as more nausea hit him. Cid
grumbled loudly about stupid potions not working as they should
before taking Leon's head in a steady grip between his hands.

"Hey, look at me."

Leon obediently opened his eyes and held still as Cid examined him, a
little disturbed by the unusually high number of Cids bent over him.

Cid frowned at the glazed look in Leon's eyes.

"Shit. This isn't helping. I don't think there's much more a high-
potion can do against a concussion. Well, no reason for you to lay
here and wait for it to take effect then. Up you get!"

Before he could protest, Cid had pulled Leon to his feet and wrapped
a thick arm around his waist, then swiftly started to drag him off
the arena. Leon slapped a hand over his mouth, his recurring
nightmare of throwing up in front of large groups of people suddenly
dangerously close to coming true.

----------

Cid grimaced in sympathy as Leon was noisily sick in one of the
locker room's wastebaskets. He had miraculously managed to make it
off the arena, but once inside the locker room, Cid had barely had
time to shove Leon's face inside the first best object (the
unfortunate wastebasket) before he started throwing up. Now Cid was
holding the brunette's sweaty hair away from his face and resisting
the urge to rub his heaving back, knowing that the younger man hated
being treated like he was weak. But as Leon started dry heaving and
let out something that sounded suspiciously like a sob he couldn't
help himself, his protective side easily gaining the upper hand.

The heaves ceased abruptly and Leon's knees started to buckle, but
the strong arms that wrapped around him kept him from sagging to the
floor. Cid carefully lowered the both of them down into a sitting
position, Leon leaning back against Cid's chest and breathing hard
for several minutes. Unpleasant shudders ran through his body from
time to time, making the breath hitch in his throat. Cid, deciding to
throw caution to the wind, pressed a hand against the brunette's
tight stomach and started to massage the still twitching muscles,
hoping to take away the undoubtedly painful tension.

"Gods, I hate this."

Leon's voice was rough in his throat.

"Yeah, I know kid. But it'll get better soon. Just relax."

"This is so embarrassing."

Cid grinned at the back of Leon's head, relieved that the younger man
was at least feeling well enough to be embarrassed. They were silent
for a few more minutes; Cid's skillful fingers working away the last
of the tension in Leon's stomach as the brunette slowly gathered his
scattered wits.

Leon had just managed to push himself away from Cid's chest and sit
up on his own when the door opened. They looked up, Cid fully
expecting to see Yuffie in the doorway and therefor highly surprised
by the tall, platinum blond man stepping inside the room.

Sephiroth had a strange smile on his face as he stood before them.
Leon glared icy daggers at him as the godlike man took in the sight
of his pale and sweaty face and was only angered further as the
blondes smile grew wider.

"What are you doing here?" Cid growled as he stood up, desperately
wishing for his tool-belt and the numerous screwdrivers and other
sharp objects he always kept there. A paranoid little voice in his
head was screaming at him that it was a very bad idea to face this
man unarmed, especially with Leon in the shape he was in. Sephiroth's
smile grew even wider, a perfect blend of nice and sinister that made
Cid's skin absolutely crawl.

"I just came to apologize," Sephiroth said, his voice smooth as honey
and dripping with amusement as his green eyes locked on Cid's. He
made a content little sound in the back of his throat and knelt
gracefully before Leon, coming face to face with the fuming brunette.

"Our fight was cut short in a way I did not wish for. Most unexpected
and not my intention at all. Actually, I very much enjoyed our little
fight. So"

Leon didn't take his eyes of Sephiroth's even as the blond reached
forward and pressed something into his hand.

"Take this, and my apologies."

He stood up in a smooth motion and turned around in a swirl of black
coat and long hair, the single black wing protruding from his back
held close to his body. After a few steps he paused to look over his
shoulder, his eyes on Leon's once again.

"I do hope we can continue our fight on another day. Until then,
gunblade master."

Something cruel and dark crept over his face, and then he was gone,
the door closing soundlessly behind him.

Cid let out a breath he didn't even know he'd been holding and sat
down beside Leon with a grunt.

"Shit. Yuffie's right, that guy is fuckin' scary. Huh? Watcha got
there?"

Leon was looking down at whatever it was that Sephiroth had given
him, a slightly confused frown on his face. He wordlessly held it up
for Cid to see.

"Whu?"

A small bottle of elixir rested in Leon's hand, the multicolored oil
glowing and pulsing with healing magic.

"Gimme that!"

Cid snatched the bottle from Leon's hand. He pulled out the cork and
sniffed the fluid, suspicious of this so called gift. Not finding
anything wrong with the smell, he poured some into the palm of his
hand, feeling the familiar fizzing as it hit his skin, then dipped
the tip of his tongue in it.

"This appears to be the real thing alright," he said as he felt a
small rush of energy spread through him just from the tiny amount of
elixir he had in his mouth. But why would Sephiroth give something as
rare and expensive as elixir away to an opponent? Maybe there was
some sort of poison hidden in it after all. But what motive could
Sephiroth possibly have that would make him want to kill Leon like
this? Maybe it really was just an apology? No, scratch that, evil
scary people don't go around apologizing like that. Some sort of
twisted mindgame, maybe? Yes, evil people likes mindgames. But what
sort of game?

More and more question marks were popping up in his head when Leon
suddenly just plucked the bottle from his hand. Cid could do nothing
but stare in horror as the younger man poured about half the oil down
his throat and swallowed.

"What the fuck do you think you're doing!" Cid exploded, snatching
the bottle back and preparing to watch his friend die an agonizing
death right before his eyes.

"What if it's poisoned?!"

Leon closed his eyes and shivered as the rush of healing energy
spread through his body, almost instantly clearing his head and
taking away aches and pains he'd been carrying around for so long
that he had forgotten that they weren't supposed to be there.

"It's not," he said and opened his eyes, his face it's usual
expressionless self.

"Idiot," Cid muttered angrily, but he was still unable to stop the
relieved sigh that betrayed his true feelings.

Some time passed without a word between them, then there was a knock
and the creak of a door.

"Hello? Are you decent in there?"

Yuffie's voice was soon followed by Yuffie's head, and then the rest
of her followed as she stepped inside the men's locker room,
apparently not caring if they were both naked in there or not.

"You okay? I brought your gunblade," she said, carefully putting the
weapon down beside Leon. She looked closely at his face.

"Hey, you look all better now! Did the high-potion finally kick in?"

"Not really," Leon muttered, halfheartedly trying to bat Yuffie's
hands from his face as she tried to examine him for herself.

"Eh?"

----------

Leon was quickly becoming bored with listening to Cid and Yuffie's
theories about why Sephiroth had done such an out of character thing.
Which in his own opinion weren't necessarily that out of character,
warriors honor and all.

The two of them were currently sitting cross-legged on the floor,
facing each-other and gesturing wildly with their hands as they
talked. That was even less interesting than when Yuffie had been
pacing back and forth. Yes, Leon was bored. Bored and sweaty and
really wanting a shower. Or a bath, considering the world they were
on. But, as things looked at the moment, with Cid and Yuffie going on
and on about things in no way as important as Leon's sweaty
situation, that didn't seem possible. He shrugged out of his jacket
and dropped it on the floor, glaring non too happily at Yuffie.
Stupid teenage girl preventing him from getting naked. Huff. A giggle
from Yuffie momentarily managed to catch his attention.

"Shit, now you're just being stupid, kid! Why would Sephiroth try to
seduce him by bringing him gifts?"

Leon slipped back into his dark cloud of boredom with a tired sigh,
now with the disturbing image of Sephiroth bringing him flowers and
chocolate burned into his brain.

Cid let Yuffie's enthusiastic babbling fade out for a while, his mind
occupied with sudden and unexpected thoughts. Sephiroth trying to
seduce Leon? That was just ridiculous, right? His eyes wandered over
to Leon who was sitting on a bench on the other side of the room,
without his jacket now, Cid noticed. It was just a stupid joke from
Yuffie's side. So then why did the thought of somebody hitting on
Leon suddenly bother him so much?

`It's probably just because it's that white-haired creep,' he thought
to himself as Leon raised his right arm to gingerly sniff his armpit.

`Yes, that's probably it. I'm just a little overprotective of a guy
I've known since he was a teenager. That's only natural, right?'

Leon stretched, the fabric of his white T-shirt pulling taut over his
chest, giving Cid an eyeful of strong muscles and tight little
nipples.

He mentally kicked the nagging voice in his mind that kept asking him
who he was trying fool.
