I Love Hair bands.Always have.I started young, thanks to my very cool parents that have never acted their age.I grew up with MTV,when it was still music. I use to sit and watch Scorpions videos with my mom.My hormones must have kicked in when I was about 4 1/2.(Mid-to-late '85)Rick Springfield was my only non-hair/non-make-up crush.
That lasted about 2 and a half weeks.
Then I found Bon Jovi.Oh baby did I love Jon.At age 5 I had a poster of him over my bunk-bed.He had his arms crossed over is chest, hair VERY puffy.I also had a white denim change purse that said "Bon Jovi".
Then 2 years later it was Def Leppard and Europe.Joe Elliott and Joey Tempest had me glued to the t.v. after school with "Carrie" and "Pour Some Sugar On Me."
Then Motley Crue came screaming into my life.Lord,ya all have got to love Vince and Nikki. And The Cult.(I ,at 9 1/2,pronounced it,"The Clot".)"Sweet Soul Sister" was the first time I saw that men didn't have to wear make-up to be hot.(But even today I find it to be a plus.)"Without You" re-inforced make-up.
Poison's "Unskinny Bop" showed me the hottie drummers.Proving that it wasn't only singer and guitarist that where cute.C.C.,Bret,and Rikki,oh baby...thank you.
Next was Dokken. One of my mom's fave as well.(We didn't like many of the same bands, and is still true to this day.)When I saw Don in "Dream Warriors" that was it,he was the next mega-crush.
Now we're well into '92.There was Slaughter.Their drummer, more like it.Blas (pronounced Blass by the 11 and a half year old me)Elias was a totaly cutie. I was totaly embarassed when I found out it was pronounced Blaze.
The music was changing fast by now,and I din't like it.I was still in love with Motley Crue,Dokken,Def Leappard, and Poison. And MTV stopped playing them one day.I fought 'tooth and nail' not to be dragged into main stream music fads.(Can anyone here say "METALLICA"?)
And I won!
Now at 17,I still love my hair bands. Now with a few more on the list.In the past 3 years,Cinderella(Who's "Gypsy Road" I always liked)Britny Fox,(Dean and Micheal Kelly) and a rekindled flame for Slaughter,my love for men with lots of hair and make-up is still stronge.
Glam and Hair bands are on the way back up.I can feel it. I'll be able to say I was always a supporter of them.I went and saw my first concert recently. It was Cinderella, and I loved it.They are rockin' just the same as they where in '87 when my mom ordered a Pay-Per-View of them in Japan.Since then I've seen many more bands live.
I don' think I'll ever out-grow my love affair with my hair bands, and men in make-up.But so what?If it wasn't for them,we wouldn't have the music that is around today.(Not that it would be so bad)So before you go,"Ugg,hair bands" remember that they are the one's that fought for the right to write about anything. They had to fight the record lables. All the more resone to love them.
So with that I close, sending out my deepest love to all the bands above.Thank you guys,I had a wonderful childhood filled with great music because of you guys.I have great memories filled with dreams of marrying about a dozen and a half of ya all.(and also have a thing for guys in make-up with lots of hair and spandex because of ya'all too,Mom can not wait to meet her future son-in-law!!)
