The French Mastiff is known as the Dogue de Bordeaux and are rather rare in its native country of France. Some say this breed originated from the Greek mastiffs, which
were used in wars and arenas by the Romans. While others claim that they stem
from the mastiffs used by the Celts to hunt wild animals. Today it is well
known as a police dog and also a domestic guard dog.
.
Key Characteristics:
An extremely large guard dog. The Bordeaux mastiff has a deep, wide, well developed chest; a big wrinkled head with a square muzzle; egg shaped eyes set wide apart; and round -tipped drop ears. The coat, which is fine, short, and soft, ranges in color from mahogany to fawn and gold. Careful breeding has modified the originally aggressive character of this dog, so that today it has a calm, generous, loving, obedient, and loyal nature.
.
Care and Exercise:
While a moderately hard brush should be used over most of the body, the tail and thighs, where the hair is somewhat long should be combed. Daily exercise walking on a leash. Ideally, this dog should be kept in a large yard where it can exercise freely.
.
Puppies and Training:
Five to nine puppies are born per litter and they need to be watched as they often are inadvertently crushed by their massive mother. It is recommended that obedience training be started early.
