A complete list of all 42 Monarchs of Scotland exists back to the reign of Kenneth I, who ruled from 843 to 860. Kings include Constantine, Eochald, Indulf, Dubh, Cuilean, Lulach, and Edgar are quite startling, but little detail in known of them. Considerable detail and family charts are at the British Monarchy site. A list back to 1034 follows: Duncam I (1034-1040) - one of the first Scottish Kings about wich any real information is unavailable. Murdered by MacBeth MacBeth (1040-1057) - Successful ruler for 17 years until killed by Malcolm and the Northumbrians David I (1124-1153) - Established national system of law and appointed sheriffs to administer justice. William I (1165-1214) - He was captured by the English during the battle of Alnwick and five of Scotland's castles had to be handed over to King Henry II of England in 1174 in order to secure his release. Alexander III (1249-1286) - Visited the English court on several occasions and resumed his father's efforts for mastery of the Isles. He was killed in 1286 when his horse fell over a cliff in the dark. Margaret (1286-1290) - Was the daughter of Eric, King of Norway and was drowned on her way to Scotland in 1290. Robert the Bruce (1306-1329) - Perhaps the best known King - details. Of the eight kings who followed the Bruce, only two were adults when they were crowned and in many cases, the regents who ruled for them produced some very unfortunate outcomes. James I (1406-1437) - A harsh and vindictive King and with heavy taxation bled the Church despite Papel protests. he was assassinated by a group led by the Earl of Atholl at Perth. Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1567) - The tragic ligfe of Mary should be elaborated as a separate entry. James VI (1567-1625) - As an infant became King following his mohter's forced abdication. He finally came to the throne of England through a circumspection fo the royal monarchy and the union of the two royal monarchies effectively ended the Scottish royal house. |
