About Ionic Lodge

Ionic Lodge was instituted in 1847
One of the oldest Lodges in Ontario, Ionic Lodge was instituted in Toronto on July 6th, 1847 by RWBro Sir Allan McNab, GM for the Provincial Grand Lodge of Canada West. Originally, Ionic was numbered 18 on the roll of the jurisdiction and 798 on that of the Grand Lodge of England. The number 25 was assigned in 1858, on the formation of the Grand Lodge of Canada. The initial meeting of the Lodge was in the Wellington Buildings across from where the King Edward Hotel now stands.

Sesquicentennial Year
In 1992, Ionic Lodge celebrated its sesquicentennial. This was marked by several events, including a reception with the Lt-Governor of Ontario, followed by a dinner at the Toronto Club, at which a cheque for $10,000 was presented to the long standing cause of the Lodge, Bloorview Children's Hospital.

Three Past Grand Masters
Ionic Lodge is the only Lodge in Ontario to have had three past grand masters as members of the Lodge. In addition, the foundation Sr Warden, RWBro Kivas Tully, was given the rank of Past Grand Master (honorary) by the then Grand Master William Gibson. These include:

  • 1897 RWBro Kivas Tully
  • 1875-79 MWBro James K Kerr
  • 1890-96 MWBro John Ross Robertson
  • 1919-21 MWBro Sir Fredrick Harcourt

Sir William Otter
Among our more noteable past masters, Colonel (afterwards Sir) William Otter, led the Toronto detachment to the Riel Rebellion of 1885.

Clergymen
Of the many clergymen who were members of the Lodge, two stand out.

  • Very Rev and Bro Charles Riley
  • Most Rev and RWBro George F Kingston
Wide Membership
The members of Ionic Lodge come from a wide background. All have served the community in one way or another; some have been military officers, others have been in the police force, while others have no uniformed service experience. Over the years Ionic members have included ministers of the Federal and Provincial governments and several justices of the supreme court of Ontario. Several of our members live in Europe, America and Australia; all are pround of their membership in this fine Lodge.

Opportunity
Due to recent developments, there is a fine opportunity for new members to take an active role in the operation of the Lodge. For both the experienced Freemason and prospective Candidate for the Mysteries and Privileges of this fine institution, there is a considerable benefit from joining now.
