So this is the short story to help you wait until this site is returned to its intended use.

Actually things were not so nice. There were at least two deaths. Things escalated pretty much. The lack of experience of the national guard with demonstrations could very well have been catastrophic. I was witness to a small incident which was pretty indicative.

Some guy who was trying to convince a guard of the rightness of the demonstrations got its shirt neatly split by a bayonet. The movement was lightning fast and so neat that the skin was not touched. The officer very nearly paniqued trying to calm his troops.

P.S. It seems dreams (and conflicts) never die: After finishing these pages I just searched for people's park and hit on a site with a more thorough documentation, an action to attempt to buy the land from the regents of UC Berkeley and a call for letters to fight the current chancellor efforts to build housing on the site! People's Park Site

The reason I published the pictures (there were lots of photos published at the time so why bother so long after) is only that I am trying to acquire some experience in scanning (the results could still be better) and in HTML. I also am under time pressure and cannot do anything very fancy. I will try to improve the site in the next few weeks, but will ultimately change it to something else. You can always give me some tips (I can certainly use them) and comments at [email protected] Thanks for bothering going through the pictures....
