My Music Works in Taiwan, Paris and United States...

I was born in Ping-Ton, a city in southern Taiwan. My father was a merchant of pianos and my mother was an elementary music teacher. They both liked music very much. I took my first piano course with my mother at the age of 5. When I was 12 years old, I began to learn cello. I went to school like any other child, and I was interested in science, as well as music. I felt there was something more intrinsically behind both of science and music. I enjoyed studying fundamental science until I graduated from junior high school at the age of 15, and however I made up my mind to study music as my career. I entered the special class for music at Kaohsiung Senior High School, majoring in cello, where I won several prizes at competitions in Taiwan.

At the age of 18, because of my back pain and my love of piano, I changed my major from cello to piano. In that year, I was admitted to the National Institute of the Arts in Taiwan with a special permission because of my excellent grades in music and majored in piano. I took piano lessons there with Dr. Rolf-Peter Wille for five years and gave two solo recitals in Taiwan in 1994. During this period, my music was much affected by my expended interests in fine arts and philosophy. I attended several art and Buddhism camps focusing on fine arts. After I took a course in Introduction to Museology because of my interest in the arts of Europe, I decided to go to Paris so that I could experience more about the culture and society behind science and art.

I stayed in Paris for one and half years. I studied in Chamber III of Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred CORTOT. I took chamber lessons with Mme. Chantal De Buchy (piano assistant of the Conservatoire de Paris), and piano lessons with Mr. Pierre Reach (professor of the Conservatoire National Région de Paris). I gave a chamber concert and passed the examination for Chamber III. During this time, I participated in Stage International de Piano à Gstaad in Switzerland in the class of Mr. Reach, and in Académie Festival Musique et Danse Aux Arcs in the class of Mr. Georges Pludermacher (professor of the Conservatoire de Paris). In France, I spent much time playing piano, traveling, visiting museums and listening to concerts. Little by little, I found I changed my music style, tones and colors, which were influenced by my life in France. I felt the multiculturalism was an important idea for my piano performance after I traveled in France, Belgium, Holland and England. This great experience pushed me hard to think about the ultimate concern behind my music.

I entered into the Master of Music program in Piano Performance at Ohio State University (OSU) in March 1996 and studied piano with Dr. Nelson Harper and Dr. Caroline Hong. At OSU, I gave my third and fourth recital in 1997-8. I took chamber and accompaniment courses each quarter with Mr. Michael Davis, Dr. William Conable and Dr. Nelson Harper, and I were awarded the Gertrude Kuehefuhs piano accompanist scholarship. I did accompaniment for a cello and a violin recitals, and also participated in a fixed family piano trio group with my brother and sister-in-law, who were doctoral students at OSU. A lot of working experience at OSU enabled me to explore my music potential and to view performance arts in a multidimensional perspective.

Recently, I am doing my Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Piano Performance at University of Minnesota UMN). I work with Prof. Lydia Artymiw and learn as many repertoires (both solo and chamber) to gain as much performance experience as I can during the doctoral program. I also enjoy my job in teaching music and piano classes in US, because finally I feel the communication between human being is an essential sense behind music and arts. I become interested in composition and transcribe three Taiwanese folksongs for piano trio by working with Dr. Judith L. Zaimont at UMN. Currently, I concern the relationship between music and my thinking about nature and culture. Hope you enjoy my music.
