Molecular Synthesis
Viagra:  C22 H30 N6 O4 S
Molecular synthesis is the development of molecules for specific purposes.  They are mostly used for biomedical applications, but can be used for structures.  Molecular synthesis  is the ability to manipulate compounds of stable elements into predetermined positions and produce certain results.  Ibuprofen, Viagra and Lipitor are synthesized molecules, built in laboratories.

Molecular synthesis is important to nanolithography because the materials used might have to be specifically engineered for the application.

Viagra, created by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, is synthetically engineered for one purpose.

For nanolithography, molecules can be created to render a specific ink for the Dip Pen Nanolithography and Nanosphere Lithography processes.  Right now, there are many known molecules that would be perfect for use with nanolithography.
