Linux GPS navigator project |
![]() Español |
This is the projects for create a GPS car navigator. This is something more than a typical "moving map" that you can do with Ozi, Fugawi, Mapsource and others. The project aim is made route calculation, but not in a static way, as is doing by Tom Tom routeplanner, Mapsource or some web sites, the aim is "nabigate". Navigate means, we select a destination (by watpoint, city/town name or street/number), and the system automatically calculates the best route from currebt position to destination and gives us directions to go. Aditionally, if we go out of the calculated route, the systems recalculates the route and continues giving us directions from the now current position to the initially selected destination (my ideal system also tells you are stupid for going out of as well directed route;-).
This is today possible, spending around 500 to 1,000 US$ and buying a GPS with navigator or a PDA with a navigation software, or spending more and buying a car navigation system with the cartography provided by GPS manufacturer.
The Linux GPS car wants to create a systsem with similar or superior features, with Open Code, with the screen interface we design, displaying the information we want and (and this is the big issue), with the cartography we like, with voice output, ...also we can include in the system hard disk enougth to have a MP3 "Juke Box" with hours and hours of our preferred music in the car.
The project is a hobby, where it is possible to learn a lot about digital cartography, routing algorithms and seen how the project is becoming more and more complicated, with new arising issues, with a car plenty of cables. The adjantage of a own development is that we can add all functionality we want (and we develop): voice output, hands free voice control , wireless Internet conection to receive traffic info, mails, ...
This is not an easy project, and it will take time to be developed, but
at end, we can have a computerized car...
