"Tell us about Spud Murphy"
Spud Murphy and the Ghost Spud Murphy and the Whalebone Snake Spud Murphy and the Deadly Disease Spud Murphy and the Chickens
When my Grandmother Jean Thomas was growing up she lived at Warwick Farm Racecourse with her mother Margaret nee Houlihan and her step father Frederick Hanson. Fred was the caretaker and the family lived in the 'Homestead' Also in residence at the racecourse were several Jockeys, one of which was Irish. Spud Murphy as he was known was like many Irishman, strongly superstitious, believing all sorts of supernatural creatures and happenings. Margaret took advantage of his gulibility to indulge in several practical jokes on Spud, often aided and abetted by the other Jockeys. As young children my sister and I would listen to Nana recount these tales which no doubt had delighted her as a child. They quickly became our favourites and would would often plead with her to 'Tell us about Spud Murphy!'
