Painted Lightbulbs
(Grinch & Penguin)

Materials:
Standard burned out lightbulb
Pencil
Acrylic Paint: (for grinch)Dark Green, Light yellow, true red, burgundy, yellow ochre.
Sponge brush
Decorative snow
Permanent Ink Marker (fine point)
Ribbon for hanger
Glue gun
Clear Matte spray sealer
Method:
First and formost Drilling into the metal neck of the lightbulb must be done over piece of wood, It is VERY important that you place the neck of the bulb on a piece of scrap wood while you are drilling.
Not only does this support the bulb-it also helps you make the holes line up directly across from each other.  Sometimes a bit of glass will break up inside the neck of the bulb as you are drilling.  This is no big deal.... it will just fall inside the bulb. (and actually make a neat tinkle sound :)
This is the glass that the metal threaded part of the bulb is adhered to and poses no problem.

Condition the bulb with either a glass conditioner, or wipe it down with rubbing alcohol. Doing this conditions the surface so that your paint will adhere well.

You should paint the threaded part of the bulb first (red)  and when it is dry, go ahead and insert what ever you are going to use for hanging the ornament.  Doing this part first gives you something to hang onto while you are painting the rest of the bulb, it also gives you a way to hang it up while you are waiting for areas to dry.

For Penguin:
Looking at the photo for reference, paint the white area first.  Add the details, such as beak, pnk cheeks and patches in appropriate colors.  Use either a fine iner brush with black paint, or an extra fine sharpie marker to form the smaller details such as eyelashes and stitches around the patches.

Once the while area is dry, paint the rest of the glass part of the bulb black.  You will find it convenient to hold the bulb by the hanger and threaded part now.  you can hang the bulb somewhere between coats to let thoroughly dry.
Use decorative snow for top of hat.
Spray seal with clear matte spray.

For Grinch:
Basecoat bulb in dark green, using 2 coats, let dry between coats.
Basecoat metal part of the bulb using 2 coats of red
Basecoat the face with light yellow.
Overpaint the face using a thinned green (2 parts water, one part paint)  let dry completely
Draw or trace patter on with a pencil
Paint the nose holiday green
using a #2 shader dry brush, (load your brush and then wipe off on a paper towel until the brush seems dry) green in eyelids, under nose and mouth.
Paint eyes using light yellow. Paint pupils burgundy and highlight with a small dot of light yellow.
Paint top of eye using yellow ochre.
Use black permanent pen to outline the face features.
Use decorative snow for top of hat.
Spray seal with clear matte spray.
