103. NOT THE MALARVYS

The Malarvys have 8 children, the eldest daughter Rosie has to take care of the children whilst parents work on the land.  She thinks one of her sisters is ill and takes her to a Clinic held at one of the homesteads.  As the child has pneumonia she has to be flown to Hospital in Coopers Crossing, accompanied by another sister who wont be parted from her.  Only Chris knows Geoff and Kate are getting married, they plan a quiet wedding away from Coopers Crossing.
Rosie:  Sally.
Dad:  Whats wrong with her?
Rosie:  I told you she was sick.
Mum:  Oh, shes not sick, shes got abit of a fever.
Dad:  Malarvys dont get sick.
Mum:  Oh just because youve never had a sick day in your life.  (looks at Rosie)  Shes having you on.
Rosie:  Shes not, I mean she didnt have breakfast this morning, and she feels like she has a temperature.  The Flying Drs. do a Clinic Run at the McGilrays place, I could take her there?
Mum:  Well what about the other kids, I dont like leaving em on their own?
Rosie:  Well Ill take em with me Mum.
Mum:  What all of em?
Rosie:  Yeah.
Dad:  Tell Buster, Ill give im a good thumping if he plays up.
Rosie:  Fat lot of good thatll do.  (Rosie takes the kids to the Clinic)

At Base, Kate sat at her desk, Chris arrives.
Chris:  Morning.
Kate:  Hi.pause.Erh, its not fair.  (Kate looking at some documents)
Chris:  What isnt?
Kate:  Oh, We want to get married, and they want our life story.
Chris:  A small price for a lifetime of happiness.
Kate:  Urgh, thats if I dont lose my sanity first.  All these fiddly little bits.
Chris:  Well think of the result, you walking down the aisle radiant, Geoff waiting adoringly for you at the alter.  Itll be worth it in the long run.  (Chris walks to her office, Kate follows)
Kate:  Hey!  Now hang on, hold your horses.  Geoff and I just want to go away quietly, and come back married.  Then well tell everybody.
Chris:  After the wedding?
Kate:  After the wedding.
Chris:  Well that wont go down too well, I mean people will feel deprived.
Kate:  Geoff and I wont.
Chris:  Well, youll throw a huge party when you come back wont you?
Kate:  (sits down at her desk) A small party.
Chris:  (puts the kettle on)  Oh well, I was looking forward to seeing you dressed in white, I think the whole town is?
Kate:  Only if they find out.
Chris:  Well you cant keep it a secret.
Kate:  Only Geoff and me, and one other person knows.
Chris:  (sighs)  Ah well I get the message.  Have you decided when youre gonna leave?
Kate:  Just before Sam gets back, I think David knows what hes doing.
Chris:  Well you better not leave it too long, or everyone is going to know.  (Chris opens up a filing cabinet, takes out some papers)
Kate:  (gets up from her desk, walks towards Chris)  CHRIS!  You said youd keep it a secret?
Chris:  Well erh I wont need to say anything, I mean its written all over your face, and Geoffs.
Kate:  Is it?
Chris:  (with mischievous smile)  Not to mention body language!
Kate:  (embarrassed smile)  Body language?
Chris:  I think people are starting to notice Kate.
Kate:  You only see it because you know, thats all, Geoff and I are being extra careful, were being as normal as possible.
Chris:  (laughs)  I wouldnt call Geoff normal, hes had this silly lovestruck grin on his face for days.
Kate:  I think youre exaggerating.
Geoff:  (walks into Base, singing, swinging his case, with a lovestruck grin on his face)  Good Morning.
Chris and Kate look at each other, Chris with told you so look on her face, laughs.  Kate picks up balloon toy throws it at Geoff, hits his face.
Geoff:  What!  What did I do?
Kate:  You Smiled!  (cradles his chin in her hand, gives him a kiss, puts her arms round him, pats his back.  A bewildered Geoff looks at Chris, putting papers back in filing cabinet).

Kate:  I thought you liked kids?
Geoff:  Well I did, once.  (Kate leans over, nibbles end of Geoffs ear)
Geoff: Hey!  Look if youre so hungry, why dont we go over to the Bistro?
Kate:  Im looking forward to having kids.  (puts her arms around Geoff)
Geoff:  Yeah, I was til today.
Kate:  How many do you think?
Geoff:  Oh erh, A couple?
Kate:  Oh not enough.  (walking out of ward, arms around each other)
Geoff:  Why, How many were you thinking of having?
Kate:  Four or five?
Geoff:  Thats abit of a handful.
Kate:  How many did you have in mind?
Geoff:  Four, thats a maximum.
Kate:  Five, and thats my final offer?       Geoff:  Four and a half?

Chris:  Now you need birth certificates.
Geoff:  Ill get one sent up from Sydney.
Kate:  What about passports?
Chris:  No, you need the actual birth certificate.
Kate:  Right.
Chris:  Now what about your honeymoon, do ya know where youre going?
Geoff:  (looking in Kates eyes)  Oh, I havent given it much thought!
Kate:  Somewhere quiet.
Geoff:  By the sea.
Chris:  I have the perfect place.  (pulls out a brochure, gives it to Kate and Geoff)  Its beautiful, I went there years ago, its not touristy, and everyones very friendly.  Cute little cottages, and theyre so romantic, I think it would be perfect for you.
Kate:  Paradise Cove.
Geoff:  Sounds like I might have to take my fishing rod.
Kate:  You take your fishing rod, I take a good book!  (Chris laughs)
Geoff:  I get the message.(pause)Mrs. Standish!
Kate:  (looks around, Vic is approaching)  Shhhhhh!
Vic:  Here, heres some peanuts, on the house, I put extra salt on em, might make you thirsty.
Geoff:  (trying not to laugh)  Ill have a light ale, Vic.

Geoff:  (chasing the kids)  What?
Emma:  Now I always thought everyone looked after everyone else in a small town?
Geoff:  Well erh.  Well they do dont they?
Emma:  Well not anymore it seems.  David needs help and just because hes new, all everyone can do is laugh at him.
Geoff:  (laughing)  Well its a funny situation?
Emma:  Not to David it isnt, and its certainly not to the girl concerned.
How about a little support guys?  (Emma leaves)
Geoff:  She seemed pretty upset.
Chris:  Maybe shes got a point.
Geoff:  Ah shes just taking it too much to heart, Davidll sort it out.
Chris:  Well I hope so, otherwise he might take DJs. advice.
Kate:  Hell go bush?                  Geoff:  Or back to Sydney?
Chris:  Where does that leave you two?
Geoff:  No replacement Dr.
Chris:  Which makes it difficult for you to justify having holidays together.
Kate:  No wedding.  (Geoff and Kate look at each other)
Chris:  No honeymoon.  (this gets their attention)
Geoff:  Well Erh, there must be something we can do to help poor David out.
Chris:  (looking at Kate)  Well, you could talk to Rosie.
Kate:  Umm.
Chris:  (looking at Geoff)  And you could talk to her parents.
Kate:  And what will you do?
(sound of breaking glass comes from Childrens Ward)
Chris:  Murder a couple of kids!
Geoff rests his head on Kates shoulder.
