105. NO MANS LAND.

Geoff and Kate return from Paradise Cove, had a wonderful honeymoon, but because of lost documents, didnt get married.  Paula, DJ. Vic and Nancy upset Geoff and Kate didnt tell them they were getting married, or that in fact they hadnt married.  Geoff and Kate had to tell everyone on the Clinic Run they were not married, DJ. was told by Wilma over the radio that they were to marry that weekend in Broken Hill.  DJ. and Paula decide as Geoff and Kate are now a twosome theyll move all Kates belongings out of her house and dump them on Geoffs verandah.  Later Geoff and Kate move her belongings back to her house, as Kate doesnt want to move in with Geoff until they are married.  Chris and David do a Clinic Run at a homestead run by women, they dont welcome David.  Chris eventually finds out why they hate men.
Geoff and Kate driving back to Coopers Crossing, Kate driving, Geoff just waking up.
Geoff:  Were almost home.
Kate:  I wonder what sort of reception were going to get?
Geoff:  (smiles at Kate)  Well, well just have to wait and see.
Walk into the Base, its empty.
Kate:  Hello?
Geoff:  Anyone at home?  (Kate rings the counter bell)  Well I dont hear any brass bands!
Kate:  Well theyll understand we dont want a fuss.
Geoff:  Well considering the situation, its just as well.  (Kate sees a note on DJs. radio console)
Kate:  I bet its our wedding party.  (opens note AT THE PUB)
Geoff:  Well it doesnt say that.
Kate:  They love surprises.
Geoff:  Yeah.  The pub, I suppose we have to go?
Kate:  I suppose so.
Geoff and Kate pop their heads around the pub door.   At the side of the room their friends are gathered round the buffet table, talking and eating, no one looks up.  Geoff and Kate walk to the bar, only Vic behind the bar notices theyve come in.
Vic:  Gday.  Have a nice holiday?
Geoff:  Oh Hi, Yes, umm considering.  (Vic walks past them to the buffet table with a tray of drinks)
Geoff:  (to Kate)  We didnt want a fuss.  (Chris looks up from the buffet table)
Chris:  Look whos here?  (their friends turn to look at them, a few say Hi, then get back to eating)
Chris:  (puts her arms round Kate, then Geoff)  Youre late.  Was it erh, hard, dragging yourselves away from the honeymoon?
Kate:  It was actually.  (they all laugh)
Geoff:  Did you tell them that we were getting married?
Chris:  Yes.  Went down like a dose of castor oil!
Geoff:  Yes erh, had noticed a certain something.
Chris:  Well they werent very happy when theyd heard youd sneaked  off.
Kate:  Oh, We didnt sneak.
Chris:  Thats their opinion, not mine, but this is what happens when you insist on depriving them of a wedding.
Geoff:  We didnt.
Chris:  You didnt?  You didnt what?
Kate:  We, We didnt get married.
Chris:  Youre kidding.  (just then Sam comes in with Emma, the buffet is Sams Welcome Home)
DJ:  Hey Chris, you can have him now.
Chris:  Look, I have to go on a Clinic Run.  You are joking?  (Kate and Geoff shake their heads, Chris leaves)
Geoff:  (to Kate)  Shall we mingle?
Kate:  Yes lets.  Just you and me.  (put their arms around each other, and walk off)

Chris, Sam and David in Nomad on Clinic Run to the Kelly homestead.
Sam:  I wouldnt exactly call them hermits, but erh, but then again theyre not the most sociable family out this way either.
David:  So its just the women, they manage there without the men?
Sam:  Ah, theyve got an old guy there that helps them out, rumour has it Bea Kelly only hired him on because the old boy was past his prime.  (they all laugh)
Chris:  Oh cut it out Sam, they do their bit for the Community, its just that they like to keep to themselves.
Sam:  I guess Im jealous thats all, theyre doing better on the land than me.  How about you buckle up, and Ill shut up.
Chris:  Yeah, Id like a moments peace.
David:  So erh, What about the Kelly girl?  Whats wrong with her?
Chris:  Well erh, Im not sure, shes had a few problems and Ive been trying to talk to her about them, she just closes up.

Geoff and Kate return to the Base, sit at Geoffs desk, with cup of tea.
Kate:  Why do they think people get married, for the benefit of others?
If theyre going to be so childish about it, they dont deserve to know whether were married or not.
Geoff:  They think we are.
Kate:  Tough.  Id lerve to give them something to really talk about.
Geoff:  If everyone assumes that we are living together, Why dont we?
We love each other, if things had turned out right in the first place, wed be spending our nights together now.
Kate:  Umm, its all back to front, its not how I imagined it.
(Geoff reaches over the desk, strokes Kates cheek and hair)
Geoff:  Well why not?
Kate:  (sitting back in her chair)  I dont know.
Geoff:  (moving towards Kate over the top of his desk)  Im going to be very lonely tonight.
Kate:  Yeah, me too.
Geoff:  (starts pulling Kates hand, then arm towards him)  Humm?  (put their heads together)
Kate:  (laughs)  No it wouldnt be right.
Geoff:  Says who?
Kate:  Me.  (Kate gets up from her chair, walks towards the door, Geoff follows, puts his arm round her waist)
Geoff:  Look, have you thought of what its going to look like, an old married couple like us sleeping in separate houses?
Kate:  (mischievous look on her face)  Now thatd give them something to talk about.
Geoff:  What?
Kate:  (cups Geoffs face in her hands, kisses him)  Ill see you tomorrow.

       ******************************************

Chris at the Kelly house, tries to talk to Jan the eldest daughter, wants Jan to have a chat, but she says shes okay.
Bea:  Once that girl has made up her mind.
Chris:  Hows she coping?
Bea:  Right as rain.
Chris:  Id like to keep helping her if I can, its obviously something shes bottling up.
Bea:  Umm, if she doesnt want to talk, thats it, shell always be stubborn, thats for sure, but she might think differently tomorrow, you never know.

       ******************************************

Kate in her bedroom, unpacking her suitcase.  First thing she lifts out is her beautiful wedding suit, hangs it in the wardrobe, puts a pair of jeans onto the bed, then she sees shes packed one of Geoffs shirts, takes it out, holds it close, puts it to her face so she can enjoy its smell.  Whilst she holds onto it, thinking about Paradise Cove, the phone rings.
Kate:  Hello?  Oh Hi Paula.  What can I do for you?  No hes not, I assume hes at home.
Paula:  (calling from the pub)  As in his place?
Kate:  Is anything wrong?
Paula:  No, No, No No.  Its not important.  Umm, You have a nice sleep Kate and Ill see you tomorrow.  Okay.  Bye.
Kate:  (mischievous look on her face)  Bye.
Paula joins Sam and DJ. sat at a table.
Paula:  You were spot on.
DJ:  I told you they got into separate cars.
Paula:  Umm.  Shes at her place, and hes at his.
DJ:  Hey.  What would two people, right, married and of the opposite sex, spend the night apart?  Thats stupid.
Sam:  Im sure theres a logical explanation to it.
Paula:  No, thats too simple.
Sam:  I reckon Kates murdered Geoff, now shes wondering if she did the right thing!
Paula:  Yes Sam.  (pinches his nose)
Sam:  Hope you two can crack the case.
Paula:  Thanks.

       ******************************************
Next morning Geoff arrives at Kates house to take her to work, at the same time Paula is passing by on her bicycle, she stops to watch.  Kate waiting in the front garden runs to Geoff, they hug and kiss.
Kate:  Married people dont do this, do they?
Geoff:  I dont think so.  (they laugh, walk towards the beast)  Look Kate, Id do anything for you, you know that, but this has got to stop.
Kate:  No, No, if they wanna play spies, Ill go along with it.  (Geoff opens the passenger door, Kate gets into the beast, Paula cycles off)

       ******************************************

Flying in the Nomad Geoff, Kate and Sam.
Kate:  Geoff, Ive been giving it some thought.  Why dont we go to Broken Hill for the weekend, and get married there?  No one would be the wiser.  (they smile at each other and kiss)
Nomad lands, Geoff opens the door, as he steps out group waiting at the Airstrip throw confetti, shout Hooray, and sing Here comes the bride
Geoff:  Erh, huh.  Just a minute.  (steps back into the Nomad, closes the door)
Geoff:  (to Kate)  Have a look.  (Kate looks through a window, sees the group still singing and throwing confetti, she smiles and waves)
Kate:  Were going to have to tell them.  (hold hands and open the door, the group cheers as they appear)
Geoff:  Urgh, Thank you.  Thank you very much.  (holds Kates hand)  Umm, but there is something that we have to tell you..

       ******************************************

Jan branding cattle, sees her younger sister Gayle go into a barn with a young man.  She looks through a window and sees the young man kissing Gayle, she attacks him with a whip.  Everyone including Chris and David rush to the barn after hearing all the commotion.  Bea and Chris cant get the whip from her, until David grabs her arms from behind, then she drops the whip.  Bea slaps her face to calm her down.
Chris:  I want you to leave us alone Bea, I want everyone to get out of here.  Now.
Bea:  You heard what the Doc. said.

       ******************************************
In the Nomad, returning to Coopers Crossing, Geoff and Kate are opening presents given to them on the Clinic Run.
Geoff:  (to Sam)  If we double up on toasters, well send one your way.
Sam:  Okay, itd better be good.  (he smiles)
Kate opens a present, a soft knitted toy, Geoff and Kate laugh.
Geoff:  Arent you glad we came clean?
Kate:  You couldnt have done better if you were on bended knee in front of the Pope.  I wish I had a camera.
Geoff:  Yes.  It was quite eloquent.
Kate:  (smiles at Geoff, nods her head)  Umm.
Geoff:  Argh!  Whatever happened to the ancient art of giving toasters?
(holds up a pair of bootees)
Kate:  Do you think theyre trying to tell us something?  (Kate holds up a jacket matching the bootees)
Geoff:  Yeah.  Theyre hopeless at guessing our sizes arent they?  (Kate laughs)

       ******************************************

At the Base DJ. talking on the radio.
DJ:  Argh Yes, still got one more Clinic to do before they get back.  Can I pass on a message?
Wilma:  Is it true?
DJ:  Is what true, Wilma?
Wilma:  That theyre not married?
DJ:  Now you know Im not allowed to discuss private matters over the airwaves, okay.
Wilma:  From what I hear it isnt that private, everybodys talking about it.  Anyway, tell em congrats from me, over and out.
DJ:  Hang on Wilma, I didnt quite catch that, had abit of static over the airwaves.  Can you just repeat that, congrats for what?
Wilma:  Their wedding in Broken Hill, this weekend.  Tell em to have one on me.
DJ:  Yeah, Yeah thanks.  Ill pass it on, over and out.  (DJ. stunned and angry.  Acquaintances on Clinic Run know about Broken Hill, but their close friends dont)

       ******************************************
Gayle announces she is leaving, to go and find her father.  Bea tells Chris he walked out on her, and left her with two babies.

       ******************************************

Kate at home, walks into her bedroom carrying all her presents, her room has been emptied of all her belongings.  Chris is on an overnight stop Clinic, and Kate has been away all day, so neither has been at the house.
Kate goes into the pub, walks to the bar where Vic, Nancy, Paula and DJ. are sat.
Kate:  Everythings missing, the whole rooms been cleaned out.
Nancy:  Your bedroom?  (all pretending they dont know what Kate is on about)
Kate:  Yes, Lock, Stock and Barrel.
Paula:  (glint in her eye)  Oh well Kate, urgh, you shouldve let me stay there, look after the place.
Geoff comes into pub, smiles at Kate, beckons her over to the jukebox, puts on some music.
Geoff:  Whats going on, you moving in?
Kate:  What?
Geoff:  Well I cant get in, all your furnitures on my verandah.  (Kate looks across at Paula, takes Geoffs arm, walks to the bar)
Kate:  It seems erh, all my stuff has been dumped on Geoffs verandah.
Nancy:  (with innocent face)  But whod do a thing like that?
Kate:  Paula?
Paula:  (smiles, throws her hands up and claps, laughs)  Yes.  It was DJs. idea though, I cant take all the credit.  Dee?
DJ:  Well we thought that seeing as youre a twosome now, that wed lend you a hand and move Kates things in.
Nancy:  But Geoff and Kate arent married, are you?
Kate:  No were not, so you can get right back there and unmove me back to my place.
DJ:  Oh youre not married.  (to Paula)  Theyre not married.
Paula:  Oh, erh.  (taps DJs. chin)  Its just so hard to keep up with things isnt it?
DJ:  Well it is, especially if youre not told anything, its very difficult.
Vic:  (to DJ.)  I reckon an apology is due, dont you?  (Kate and Geoff prepare for an apology)
DJ:  Youre right Vic.  Youre absolutely right.  (Geoff and Kate look at Paula and DJ. each couple expecting the other to apologise)
DJ:  Well?
Geoff:  What?
Kate:  What, Us, What for?
DJ:  Well for not telling us that you were married, and then for not telling us you were not married.
Kate:  We were going to tell you.
Paula:  But when Kate, on your Silver Anniversary?
Kate:  Well Yes, the way youve all been carrying on.
DJ:  Lets face it Paula, were always the last to know.
Paula:  Virtual strangers get to know before we do.
Vic:  Well I suppose we were all abit upset when you snuck off like that.
Kate:  We didnt sneak.
Vic:  If you want to keep it a secret, its nothing to do with us.
Kate and Geoff smile at each other.

       ******************************************

Chris finds out that Beas husband abused Bea and her daughters, but doesnt stop Gayle going to find her father.  Chris arranges for Bea and elder daughter to get counselling.

       ******************************************

Geoff and Kate, very tired after moving all Kates belongings back to her house.  Both flop on Kates bed, piled up with her things.
Kate:  Oh I give up.  (Kate sits on bed)
Geoff:  Look, it shouldnt take too long to sort out.
Kate:  No I mean the wedding.  (Kate flops on her back on the bed)  Oh lets give em what they want.  Book the church, send out the invites.  (Whilst Kate is saying this, Geoff reaches for a pillow, flops down on bed beside Kate, pillow behind his head, smothering Kates face)
Geoff:  Oh no, thatll take ages.
Kate:  Thanks.  (to Geoff for smothering her face, brings her head out from underneath the pillow, lays her head besides Geoffs)  Theyll probably want us to get engaged too.  (Kate and Geoff look at each other)

Kate:  Urgh.  Ah well, just think of all the extra wedding presents well get.
Geoff:  How did it get this complicated?
Kate:  One day, when were married, well look back on this and laugh.
Geoff:  I wont, Ill be old and senile by the time were married.
(Kate laughs)  And youll regret missing out on my youth.
Kate:  Oh, Ive already missed out on that.  (Kate giggles)
Geoff:  Ill have you know Im at my prime, youll probably never find out.  (Kate turns on her side, snuggles up to Geoff, plays with his collar)
Kate:  Never mind.  You know Ill always remember how we lay here and you bragged and I listened.  (touches his chin with her finger)
Geoff:  (turns on his side to face Kate)  Im not bragging.
Kate:  Ummm.  (Geoff puts his hand around her ear and head, giving her a long kiss)
Geoff:  Well?  (smiling at Kate, playing with her ear)
Kate:  (licking her lips)  You been practising?  (they both grin, Geoff tickles Kate, mercilessly)
Kate:  (laughing)  No, No, No No, No No!
