| 104. THE ADVENTURE . Louise: Town at last. Alex: Coopers Crossing, our last chance to refuel and buy food. Paula: Em. (pointing to the trailer and tracked vehicle coming into town) Check it out. What is it? Emma: Don�t know. (DJ. looks) (Vic looks) DJ: Hey, that�s some equipment you�ve got there? Alex: It�s called an Axtrack, pretty high spec. stuff, eh? DJ: You�re not kidding. I�m DJ. Alex: Alex Thompson, Hi. This is Louise. Louise: Hi. DJ: Hi Louise. (everyone shakes hands) Huh, this thing�ll go anywhere would�nt it? (climbs on trailer to look at tracked unit) Ah Gross! ****************************************** At Base Geoff and Kate quickly getting together all the things they need for their trip. Geoff: Wallet, car keys, cheque book, what else do we need? Kate: Have you got the address? Geoff: Yes, it�s in my pocket. Kate: Come on, let�s go. Chris: You�re going to love this place, it�s just like a postcard, perfect for a wedding. Geoff: Now look, not a word �til we�re long gone. Chris: No, cross my heart and hope to die. (kisses Geoff) Now quickly, go, go, go. Have a wonderful time. (kisses Kate) Kate: We will. Chris: Drive carefully. (just as they get to the door, DJ. enters) DJ; Where you going? Geoff: Oh,Erh. We�re going to the coast�pause�Conference. Kate: It�s a Medical Conference. DJ: Arrgh! What�s all the secrecy? Geoff: (looks at Kate, both trying to feign surprise) Secrecy, what secrecy? DJ: I did�nt hear anything about a Medical Conference? Chris: You two better hurry. DJ: David�s out on a 3 day Clinic Run, it�ll be just you and me running the place? Chris: (pats his chest) We can cope. Geoff: Argh, My goodness, look at the time, bye. Chris: Have a great Conference. Paula: Geoff, someone from the Safari wants a tetanus shot? Geoff: I�m sorry. I�m gone. Kate: Bye. DJ: Hey, Hang on! (Chris turns DJ. around) Chris: No, come on DJ. Would you like some coffee? Paula watching Geoff and Kate leave, has a knowing look on her face. ****************************************** Geoff and Kate heading out of Coopers Crossing in �the beast�. Geoff & Kate: (laughing and happy) Geoff: We�re free! Kate: Alright! Geoff: I just can�t believe it! (pulls �the beast� off the road, they unclip their seat belts and kiss) Do you realise when we pass this spot again, we�ll be Mr. and Mrs. Standish? (they kiss again) Kate: Umm, Erh�(still kissing)�No, no, no, not Mr. and Mrs. Standish, Dr. Standish and Nurse Wellings, I�ve got my professional pride. Geoff: What! Kate: Umm. Geoff: Well, What are we getting married for? Kate: (pats his chest) Don�t be silly,THIS is why we�re getting married! (gives Geoff a long passionate kiss) ****************************************** In the pub, Paula at the bar with Louise, Alex on the �phone. Paula: So you get to model all sorts of outfits? Louise: Oh well, it�s more publicity for the Axtrack really. Chris comes into the pub. Chris: I�m Dr. Chris Randall, Who wants a tetanus shot? Louise: Me. Chris: Follow me. Alex: (on �phone) Great, Now what am I supposed to do, at this rate Lou will be in every shot. Out there, likely chance, okay, okay, I�ll be in touch. Paula: So how many magazines do you work for? Alex: Oh dozens, all trashy! Paula: Oh. Alex: (to Louise) Another one�s pulled out. Louise: Did�nt want to rough it? Alex: Models, don�t suppose there�s an Agency round here? Paula: No�(pause)�I know, I volunteer. Alex: What for? Paula: You can take photo�s of me, if you want? Alex: Done. Paula: What? Alex: I mean it. You�ll be just fine. Paula: Oh. (laughs) Alex: Money�s great, mind you it�s no Vogue spread. What do you say? Paula: No, no. I could�nt. Alex: Okay. Paula: No, I could, yeah I�ll get time off. (looks across at Chris, she smiles, looks at Nancy, she disapproves) ****************************************** Pete goes into Luke�s shop to buy supplies, Luke recognises him from his past. Pete: Mitchell, Mitchell, that�s your name. How�s your little business you�ve got here, Mitchell. (threatening Luke with sauce bottle) Friendly people, quiet town? (Jack enters shop, looks across at Luke) Keep it that way. (stuffs money in Luke�s pocket, leaves store) Jack: You going down to the pub for Paula�s farewell? Luke: Where�s she going? Jack: She�s got a job with those models. That guy that was just here, he�s their driver. He looks pretty capable. Luke: Very capable, how long has he been working for the Safari company? Jack: I dunno. Why do you ask? Luke: Just wondering. Jack: Just wondering? Now look Luke there�s something about this bloke, is�nt there? Luke: Oh it was a long time ago. Jack: Meaning what? Luke: Just that. Jack: Luke if you know something about him, why don�t you just tell me? Jack: Ah it�s erh, it�s probably just ancient history. Jack: Ancient. Well why are you looking so worried? ****************************************** Luke offers his services as a guide to Alex, free, as he knows the area. She accepts his offer. Jack questions Pete. DJ. takes a photo of Paula as she leaves, Pete also in the photo. Jack gets a copy, sends it off to Sydney HQ. ****************************************** Geoff and Kate make an overnight stop, before proceeding to Paradise Cove. They book in at Reception. Geoff: It�s so strange, it�s so fantastic! Kate: So much freedom! Receptionist: Yes, Can I help you? Geoff: Argh. We�d like a room for the night please? A man walks into Reception. Man: Dr. Standish! (shakes Geoff�s hand) Is this a small world or what? Geoff: Herh, Mr. Lovell. Hello. Mr. Lovell: (shakes Kate�s hand) Hello Nurse Wellings. Kate: Hello. How are you? Mr. Lovell: Well. What brings you to these parts? Geoff: Oh well erh, We�re on our way to Sydney. Mr. Lovell: Sydney? You�re abit out of your way, are�nt you? Geoff: Urgh, Well we�.. Kate: We gotta pick someone up. Geoff: A patient. Mr. Lovell: A patient? Kate: That�s right. (Kate and Geoff have a silly grin on their faces) Receptionist: Your key Sir, Room 12. Geoff: (hands key to Kate) Erh, here�s your key. Kate: Ah thanks. Geoff: Umm, Where�s mine? Receptionist: You said �A� room? Geoff: Urgh, each, I, I, meant each. (Mr. Lovell smiles at them knowingly. Kate and Geoff look �caught out�) ****************************************** Jack tell�s Chris about Luke�s hunch concerning Pete, also that he sent photo to Sydney. Pete is on the run, really hard case from Sydney�s Mafia. Jack tries to make contact with Paula to warn her. ****************************************** Next day, Geoff and Kate drive into Paradise Cove. Geoff: We�re here! Kate: Now we have to look out for the little blue n� white Chip Shop. Geoff: And the scented trees and garden. Kate: And the cute cottages. (As they look out of the car windows everywhere is built up, supermarkets, etc.) Geoff: When did Chris say she was here? Kate: Urgh, She came on holidays with her parents, when she was 15 or 16. Oh! (Geoff and Kate laugh, drive on to Boarding House Chris stayed at when she was 15 or 16) Kate: This can�t be it, it�s so run down? Geoff: (looks at brochure) This is it alright. (they go inside) Geoff: Hello! Anyone at home? Mrs. Granger: (scurries out of a back room) Oh, Just look at you, I�m so glad that you came to us! Geoff: You were recommended by a friend. Mrs. Granger: Argh. Kate: She used to holiday here, years ago. Mrs. Granger: And we have�nt changed a thing, it�s completely authentic. Kate: Where�s the white picket fence? Mrs. Granger: That fell down, years ago. Kate: And the marmalade cat? Mrs. Granger: She died. Geoff: I�m Dr. Standish and this is Miss Wellings. (Geoff puts his arm around Kate, they smile lovingly at each other) Mrs. Granger: I know, I know, and I�m Mrs. Granger, call me Elsie. I want this to be a special time for both of you, so I�m going to explain everything step by step. Umm, So go and sit down�(kettle whistle�s)...the tea, thank heavens for that, I could�nt live without it. (Geoff and Kate sit at a table in the Dining Room, Mrs. Granger joins them) Now when you come in this afternoon, you will go to your separate rooms, which I�ll show you soon, you must�nt see each other before the ceremony, no cheating. Kate: Oh no. Geoff: Definitely not. (both have to hide a smile) Kate: Have you got the documents? Mrs. Granger: Oh yes, George sees to all that, he�s the Celebrant. Geoff: George? Mrs. Granger: My husband, he�ll be back later. But never mind, you go outside and enjoy yourselves, don�t worry about a thing, just go and flop on the beach. At the beach, they try windsurfing, but both fall off their boards, kiss and hug in the water, splash each other, then Geoff picks Kate up and gently puts her down on the laid out beach towels. Both laughing and very happy, Geoff keeps kissing Kate. Kate: Hey, No cheating before the wedding, remember. Geoff: Oh Yeah! (carries on kissing Kate, nibbles her ear, both laugh) ****************************************** At the photo shoot, Luke saves Paula falling over the edge of a steep slope, but he falls and breaks his leg. Paula calls for help. ****************************************** Kate and Geoff in their separate rooms get ready for their wedding. When dressed Kate tries to sneak out of her room to see Geoff, but Mrs. Granger coming up the stairs, stops her. Mrs. Granger: Oh, Oh, Oh, Where do you think you�re going? Kate: Oh Mrs. Granger, I was just���. Mrs. Granger: Naughty Girl! You must go back in your room this instant. (pushes Kate back into her room, closes the door) Kate rings Geoff. Geoff: Hello? Kate: Geoff? Geoff: I feel like I�m in solitary confinement here. Kate: (laughs) You are, look we better whisper, she might start wondering. Geoff: Well whatta we going to do? Kate: We better just wait. Geoff: I love you. Kate: I love you too. Bye. Geoff: Bye. Kate: Bye. Geoff: (quietly) Bye. Kate: (laughs) You hang up first. Geoff: Alright, Bye. (after sitting in their rooms a very long time Geoff rings Kate) Kate: Hello? Geoff: I�ve had enough! Kate: So have I. Geoff: (meet up outside their rooms) LET�S GO! (go downstairs into Reception, where Mrs. Granger is on the �phone) Geoff: MRS. GRANGER! Mrs. Granger: (looks at Geoff) Oh No! (to person on �phone) Hold on dear. Geoff: What�s going on? Mrs. Granger: Oh this is very bad, very bad. Geoff: Where is Mr. Granger? Mrs. Grnager: It�s bad luck, I told you! Geoff: We�ve been up there for two hours. Mrs. Granger: I know, I know, I�m sorry, I�ll be right with you. Would you like a cuppa? Geoff: No thank you. Mrs. Granger: Well take a seat. As Geoff and Kate walk away Geoff notices for the first time Kate in her beautiful white wedding suit. Geoff: Kate you look beautiful. (they kiss in the dining area) Mrs. Granger: (still on �phone) Oh no dear, not a meringue topping, the egg white will play havoc with the lemon juice! (turns round to see Geoff and Kate kissing in the dining area). Oh good heavens, I�ll have to go Mavis, I�ll explain later, Goodbye. Mr. Granger comes in, tries to sneak past Mrs. Granger on the �phone. Mrs. Granger: Where have you been? Mr. Granger: Busy Elsie, I�ve been busy. Geoff and Kate hearing Mr. Granger, stop kissing come forward to front of dining area, Mrs. Granger: But those two have been waiting for hours. Mr. Granger: Oh drop off, Elsie. Mrs. Granger: Oh get on. (pushes him towards Geoff and Kate) Mr. Granger: (laughs) You must be Geoff? (shakes hand) Jane? (shakes Kate�s hand) Kate: Kate. Mr. Granger: Oh right, Well we better get this wedding on the way. Erh, Elsie, Where are the birth papers? Mrs. Granger: I gave them to you. Mr. Granger: Oh no you did�nt. Mrs. Granger: Oh yes I did. (Geoff and Kate look at each other in dismay at this exchange) Mr. Granger: Elsie, the wedding is hardly valid without a birth extract. Elsie, I�m sorry we�ll have to find the documents. Mr. Granger: (guiding Mrs. Granger into their private quarters) Elsie why do you lose everthing? Mrs. Granger: Why is it always my fault? Mr. Granger: You were supposed to look after the papers. Geoff and Kate are left standing in Reception looking at each other. Geoff: It�s like a dream. Kate: I�ve got an idea. Geoff: What? Kate: Let�s go for a walk. Geoff: Yes. ****************************************** Jack and Chris travel overland to help Luke. Pete has to operate on Luke�s leg to save it, then leaves the area before Jack and Chris arrive. ****************************************** Geoff and Kate walk along the seafront, hand in hand. Kate: Argh, I love the smell of the sea. Geoff: Yeah�.pause�.You know those two old fogies have probably got their act together by now�(they both laugh, look lovingly at each other)�What do ya say, shall we go back? Kate: Oh, We could give it a go. (Geoff effortlessly moves their entwined fingers into the small of Kate�s back, holds her close) Geoff: I don�t care, I�m enjoying myself. (looks lovingly at Kate) Kate: Yeah, me too�(they kiss, Kate laughs)�I mean I�d hate to have a normal wedding and have everything go right. (walk back to �the beast�, Geoff puts key in lock, key breaks) Geoff: Oh, What? Kate: (laughs, they start walking) Come on. ****************************************** Luke brought back to Hospital. Alex and Louise leave Coopers Crossing. ****************************************** Back at Boarding House, Mr. Granger still searching through Reception desk, documents have still not been found. Geoff and Kate change clothes. Prepare to return to Coopers Crossing. Mr. Granger: How can I possibly be expected to find anything in this mess? Mrs. Granger: If you hate it so much, why don�t you just leave. Mr. Granger: That my dear is precisely what I�m going to do. Hmmm. Mrs. Granger: Good. Mr. Granger: Huh. As he leaves Geoff and Kate come into Reception with their cases. Mr. Granger: (to Geoff and Kate) Marriage, it�s misery for life. Geoff: I gather you did�nt find the documents? Mrs. Granger: I�m afraid not, but not to worry my husband will be back, he always is, and he�ll get some new documents. Geoff: Yes well, umm. We�ve�.. Mrs. Granger: Come back in a month, we�ll have a lovely wedding, on the house. (Geoff and Kate sigh, both fed up) ****************************************** Driving in �the beast� through Paradise Cove, returning to Coopers Crossing. Geoff: (kisses Kate�s hand) At least we had two great days together. Kate: The worst is yet to come. Geoff: The worst? Kate: Oh Chris must have told everyone in town by now, and they all think we�re married. Geoff: Oh. Kate: What are we going to do? Geoff: Yeah well. We could always pretend. (the look Kate gives Geoff, indicates she can�t pretend. ****************************************** In the pub. Chris: Now listen you guys, with everything that�s happened over the past couple of days, I have�nt had the chance to make the announcement I promised I�d make. On behalf of Geoff and Kate, I have the pleasure to let you know that right at this very moment Geoff and Kate are man and wife. Paula: I knew that. Nancy: Hey, That�s not right. Vic: That�s modern Nance. Weddings are like that these days. Nancy: Well it�s too modern for my taste. We�re her friends. Where did they get married? Was Kate a white bride? Chris: Well���� Nancy: Well I thnk it�s terrible. Paula: I think it�s great. Vic: Look Nance, it�s their wedding, they�re entitled to do what they like with it. DJ: Drs. and Nurses Syndrome, I should�ve seen it coming. It was so obvious. Chris: Now look, don�t worry guys, when they come back they�re going to throw a huge party to celebrate with all their friends. Nancy: You can have a party any day of the week, it�s not every day you have a wedding. Everyone in the pub starts talking at the same time. ****************************************** |
