You won't believe me, but the weather has just changed
from hot and humid two days ago to nice and cool today. The
weather has just turned so quickly.
The first two weeks of September were hot and humid. The
temperature was in the high 20's and low 30's, but the humidity
made things difficult. I would step out for breakfast around
7:30 - 8:00am and I came back sweating. This was early in the
morning. Imagine the rest of the day. One of students said that
his dormitory was so hot that he and some his roommates decided to
sleep on the balcony. They're fortunate to have had a balcony.
I was very grateful for the air conditioners we got. They
made our lives much more comfortable. There's nothing like
stepping out of a literal sea of humidity into the brisk
breeze of AC. Plus, these air conditioners had remote controls.
I believe that this is true of all air conditioners in China.
It will definitely be one of the most memorable things about China.
Sometimes, though, the power was turned off. And I don't mean
that I unplugged the thing or something. The university literally
has the ability to turn off the power. Two weeks ago, I woke up
and discovered that the air conditioner had stopped running and none
of the lights would turn on. The room quickly got hot. Fortunately,
the power resumed at 2pm. Then last week, the power went off
again. The ladies at the front desk said that the power would
return at 2 or so, but when sunset came, there was still no power.
The power didn't start back up until 7pm. All I can say is,
"Welcome to China."
Today, however, was a very different story. The air conditioners
are off and we've got the windows open. There is a very nice breeze
coming through the windows. I went out around 5:30pm with the other
teachers and it was the first time for me to experience really
comfortable weather. It was wonderful. Now, I just have to remember
to keep applying bug spray. I've been getting bites again. I had like
7 bites on my 1st and 2nd day.
I'm not sure how long this weather will last, but I am going to
try to make the most of it. The weekend is just around the corner
and hopefully I'll be able to do something. Talk to you all later.
