The childlife department took all the kids to the Indianapolis Children's Museum in the middle of March 1988. The kids who didn't have wheelchairs came via ambulance on gurneys. Everyone was included and parents and siblings were invited.

Danny has always had a problem coping with new situations. and this one was no different than others he mostly hated it at the time, but later remembered it as fun (One thing I've learned about Danny is that his memory is so good it's almost creepy)

His nurse tried to take off his shoes and put his toes in the water in PlayScapes. He didn't want anything to do with it! His RT (respiratory therapist) wanted him to go on the carousel. After making an attempt we decided that a horse was not good for Danny so they rode on the benches. Because he was still full time ventilator dependent, the RT left the vent on the wheelchair and bagged him with the ambu for the duration of the ride... as did other RTs to other kids. I think the RT loved it way more than Danny did.

In some ways it was really stressful for the kids to have all those new experiences, but in other ways it was good to try to treat them to a time that 'normal' kids experience without a fuss. I'm sure it was alot of work and planning and I for one will always remember that trip and apprieciate what they were teaming together to try to do.
