BIG BIRDS
Adopting a Grey, cockatoo, amazons, or Macaw is just like adopting a child.  They needs TONS of attention, TON of room, and TONS of fresh food.  I have had a grey so I know more about them the the other bigger birds but will get info on them.

Greys are known talkers with the vocabulary of a 5 year old child.  The myth is that you have to repeat to a bird to make them learn a word or phrase.  They have to hear it once and they repeat it if they like what they hear.

Not all greys speak, but I would say 90% do.  They start off mimicing noises around them, the dog, cat, anything electronic like the microwave, any kind of alarm, noises you make, they pick it up quick.

Sexing you need to send either blood or plucked feathers to a lab.

Age of a Congo grey (the one with the red tail) you can tell by their eyes.  If they are all black pupils with a little gold, they are young.  The older they get the more gold their pupils get.

Timneh's are the smaller of the grey birds with a darker grey feathers, maroon tail and the older they get their beak turns pink. Their eyes turn golden too.

All birds in general have their own personality, so you may want to shop around to see which bird is right for you.

Greys can live up to 50 years years but the ave. is between 20-30 years.
Greys skin is an oil base and needs to be sprayed from time to time.

They have a habit of only going to one person in the house, so they need to be trained to go to anyone.

Cockatoo's are a powder base (which I am allergic too) so when you pet them you may have a white(ish) powder on your hand.

Cockatoo's are curious birds and love to watch every move you make.

Amazons are not the most trusting of birds and may take a long while to get their trust.

TEACH YOUR BIG BIRD HOW TO SAY HIS/HER ADDRESS, THAT WAY IF (GODFORBID) THEY GET OUT, THEY CAN TELL THE PERSON WHO FINDS THEM, WHERE THEY LIVE.
