| LINFIELD V DRUMAHOE (Boucher Playing Fields) Linfield were hosting new side Drumahoe Ladies in their first year in the National League. Linfield started off the better side dominating play from the whistle, Katrina Montgomery nearly putting the home side ahead following a defensive error from the visitors after 5 minutes. Julieann McCann ran the show for the Blues in the centre of the park, winning everything in the air and playing some suerpb balls through to Todd on the right wing who on several occassions could have put Linfield ahead. Linfield striker Paula McConnell had to be replaced early on following a knee injury, new signing Shona Hewitt was quick to make her mark putting the Blues 1-0 up from an inswinging corner from winger Sasha Birch which Hewitt buried from 8 yards. Drumahoe were determined to get themselves into the game following a slow start and began to press Linfield for an equaliser. They were finally rewarded after a through ball split the Blue's defence and the striker latched on to it to net the equaliser for Drumahoe. The 2nd half kicked off with Drumahoe having a few near misses only for stephens fine goalkeeping keeping the home side on level terms. Linfield pressed hard for the 3 points and should have went ahead from Montgomerys superb volley from 25 yards which was just inches over the bar, also Todd continued to give the visitors defence a headache, turning the right back inside out she put in a wonderful cross which midfielder Simpson forced a great save from the keeper and went out for a corner. Linfield put alot of players forward for the corner which paid off seeing midfielder McCann netting a super striker into the bottom corner, her first Linfield goal in over a year - her celebration told the story!! Just as Linfield thought the game was going their way Drumahoe again equalised from a mistake from inside the Linfield half, the Drumahoe striker again beat right back Spence for speed and slotted home for the visitors. With minutes to spare linfield continued to look for the winner but it wasn't to be and the game finished 2-2. Linfield Team: Stephens, Spence, Wasson, Perry, Caldwell, Birch, McCann, Simpson, Todd (Mearns), Montgomery, McConnell (Hewitt). Player of the Match: Julieann McCann |
