Suggestions for further research.
SYDNEY
The names on the Sydney page come from my own research into the Tivoli theatre in Sydney. The references I have used were mainly newspapers from the 1910 era.
The list on the Sydney page mainly comes from an article called." Reminiscences of the stage. True Tales of the Tivoli theatre." By Valentine Day. This article was published in The Referee Newspaper from May 2nd 1917. It consists of about 15 parts, which were published continuously from that date. It is obviously a very long article and contains at least a hundred names of old identities from Sydney and from the Tivoli theatre. If you have a relative who performed at the Tivoli between 1900-1917 they could be mentioned there.
Another useful magazine for that era is Theatre Magazine. It was published in Sydney. If you know the date your relative performed it is likely that there is a review in Theatre Magazine. It was published monthly.
The State Library in Sydney has copies of the Referee on Microform. These can be photocopied. The Mitchell Library in Sydney has copies of Theatre Magazine, also on Microform.
The Tivoli Souvenir. Presumably by Edward Maas. Dated 1913, it includes biographical sketches of people who performed at the Tivoli. It also includes several inaccuracies. The only copy I know of is the one available at the University of NSW library. It is extremely hard to find. This copy is incomplete.
Tivoli programmes. Mitchell Library in Sydney has copies of many early programmes from both Tivoli theatres
.MELBOURNE.
The Tivoli Story; 55 years of variety. Published by the Tivoli theatre Melbourne . Includes pictures and biographies. Traces the theatre until it's closure as a live venue. It also includes some very glaring inaccuracies.
The Passing Show. Pamphlet Number 3. "The Tivoli, a chronology of Melbourne's home of Vaudeville", by Frank Van Straten. Excellent pamphlet which has a brief discussion of the theatre's history followed by a timeline of performers from 1866 to 1966.
Both of these publications are available at the State Library of Victoria. The State Library also has Tivoli programmes, although I am unsure of the extent of their holdings.
