The Lighthouse
Back to poems
One time I found myself
On the edge of Rocky Point
Laughing wildly into the wind
Letting it messy itself in my hair
My nightgown, blowing around violently
Below me, the torrential waves thrashing about

I had the sudden urge to throw myself at the mercy of the tides
To feel what it was like to fight for something
And in the second before I was to jump
Something caught my eye

Blinking and flickering
Like a candle in the wind
But not so menacingly

I had forgotten the old lighthouse on the cliffs
How it would flash intermittent sparks across the blemished night
Warning the innocent ships of their oncoming doom
And I realized that I was the same innocent ship
Stranded in the furious waves
Weighted down by the pull of the moon upon me

Suddenly the slippery pebbles underfoot gave way
And I felt myself soaring through the heavens
And even though I knew I would hit the frigid water below
And quite possibly abandon all hope for survival
I smiled
And for the perfect moment
I was free
