Drowning
Back to poems
I let the cool water surround my head
The night you left me

The beach was empty
It was cloudy and cold, too
The sky resembled your stormy eyes

I walked along in the surf
Sometimes running
Sometimes stopping and sitting in the waves
I wore my wedding dress into the water

The salt and the sand
Swirled around and stung my eyes
I could hear it roaring back and forth
Inside my head

And I thought to myself
Is this what it's like to die?

A sudden peace filled me
Like the calm before the storm
And I wondered
Am I ready to go?

I lied down in the sand
Water rushing all about me
I breathed it in expecting to choke
But nothing happened
And then there was light

Blinding light coming from all directioins
Piercing my skin; painful, blistering
Entering my body from every point
Filling my head and radiating out my eyes

It was like drowning, only backwards...
