And In Her Eyes
Back to poems
She smiled a lot
A pathetic attempt
To make us believe
She was all right

Deep inside
If you listened long enough
You could hear her screaming
Yearning to escape

And in her eyes
You could see the miles,
The roads,
The melancholy

Through all her smiles
Her eyes never changed
It was that kind of crestfallen
Embodiment of pain

The one that makes you
Crumble inside
Because you know you feel it too
You know you've seen the monsters
That keep her awake at night

And you know you've encountered
The endless miles
The lonely roads
The infinite melancholy
And the yearning to go home

But everything you encounter
Is one more reminder
That through your eyes
All you see
Is someone else's pain
And your own boundless desire
To escape the apathy
That everyone is drowning in
