Overall the seminar focused on the SQ3R method of reading text books. The gentleman who held the seminar was Mr. Heatwole. He is an English 109 teacher here at Thomas Nelson. The steps that we went over were Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. Survey was basically just an overview of the text you have to read. The overview of the text contained looking over headings, subheadings, pictures, and the layout of the text. The next step, Question, is a process that helps you better understand the text you are reading. Create these questions from any headings, subheadings, or bold and italic words that are scattered throughout the text. Now you can read through the text and write answers to questions that you created. Recite is the process of testing what you know by covering the notes section of your papers and answering the questions. You want to always mark anything with a question mark that you may need clarified. Review contains many steps to it. The other key steps are to first review, then develop a regular study time, over-learn the material, study immediately before going to bed, and always intend to remember. I enjoyed this seminar and do believe it helped me better understand how to read a textbook. |
