Multiple Intelligences |
The theory of multiple intelligences is something I believe everyone should become aware of. Knowing about these eight different innate intelligences that humans have will help people better understand themselves and their own ways of learning. Better understanding the innate intelligences that humans may have can help a person perform better in school and help them choose a career that suits them. I am saying I believe this is for everyone because we all have some of these eight intelligences. |

Multiple intelligences theory was developed by a man named Howard Gardner. He graduated from Harvard University but has many honorary degrees from twenty-one different colleges. He developed this theory back in 1983, holding that there are eight different intelligences. These intelligences, or as Gardner called them, "smarts" were created to help us learn and better understand the world. This theory suggests that different types of intelligence exist in all human beings. The eight different intelligences are naturalistic, kinesthetic, linguistic, logical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, musical, and visual/spatial. Howard's definition of intelligences is, Intelligence is a biopsychological potential to process information that can be activated in a cultural setting to solve problems or create products that are of value in a culture. (Armstrong) Education in schools do not focus on these eight intelligences, most schools only focus on reading, writing, and arithmetic. He thinks students will and can perform better if the schools would broaden their vision on education. If teachers use different exercises and activities then they are more likely to reach more students while teaching. When I took an online MI inventory, I scored a fifteen and above on all of the eight different intelligences. There are a few that are higher than the others, and I do believe they are my strong intelligences. The highest one that I scored on was logical/mathematical, which is number smart. This I believe is very true because I have always been a great student in math no matter if I tried or not. In high school, I would skip my fifth period math class, which was right after lunch almost everyday. I would always make sure I was there for the test or quizzes and would ace them with no problem. This of course upset my teacher because she knew I was a bright student but never showed up for class. This also pertains to my next intelligence because I can visually work out a problem in my mind to find the answer without writing it out on paper. The other intelligence that I scored very high on is visual/spatial which is picture smart. I have always been a visual learner. My performances on assignments that have graphs or pictures are much higher than essay formatted test. This I know because of the psychology test my teacher gave me to determine the type of learner and test taker I am. When I study, I tend to always remember charts, graphs, and really any visual that I look at for more than fifteen seconds. I did not score to high on the naturalist or linguistic intelligences. This is true because I really know nothing about nature. I would not or could not survive very well if put out in the woods. I wouldn't know how to start a fire or even what might be safe to eat. The low score in word smart can be correct. I have always grown up using slang which is probably what really hurt me in that specific intelligence. |

Multiple Intelligences is a psychological and educational theory. This theory suggests that all human beings have an assortment of different intelligences. This theory has been criticized by a lot of different educators. They argue that this theory is based only upon Gardner's own intuition and not any real data. They also claim that these intelligences are just other names for different personality traits or talents that people have. I believe the more people that are introduced to this theory will adapt to these intelligences. They will be able to see their own initiate intelligences in the same way Gardner does. Some of my views of myself have changed. I always thought I was bad in math until my performance in math told me differently. Then I really thought about it and have always done well in math, so it was true. These intelligences can help improve the success students can have in school. Knowing your own innate intelligences can also help you decide on a career choice. Additionally, you will be better prepared while choosing courses that you know you can succeed at in college. I am number smart, I could take two math classes at a time and succeed in both very well. This is due to knowing my own innate intelligences. |

Multiple intelligences theory is also very helpful in finding a good career. One of my best intelligences is visual/spatial. This intelligence has first led me to researching the field of forensic science. For along time, I considered becoming a crime scene investigator working with the police. This career is one where a person must be very observant of the scene and everyone around at all times. I wanted to be able to study visually crime scenes and evidence. Being able to tell that someone did not really sign something by doing a visual handwriting analysis, is something I am very good at due to my high visual intelligence. Then I changed my career path to forensic pathologist due to my interest in the medical field. Multiple intelligences theory has reassured me that I can complete the schooling that it will take to become a forensic pathologist and also succeed at my career choice. |

Getting the word out about these multiple intelligences and Howard Gardner's theory is very important to everyone in my opinion. I would love to find a way for more people to know and learn about this theory of intelligences. Knowing about these eight intelligences can help people better understand the way their mind might work when they are trying to obtain knowledge. Also knowing about this theory will help you be able to choose your best career choice or path and also can help you perform better academically. Now, knowing what you have learned about multiple intelligences, what career choice may you choose and why? |
