That's why The News-Press Editorial Board endorses him in the Aug. 26 Republican Primary.
A man of formidable political skills, Scott has been a forceful and, we think, largely able leader of the best term life insurances sheriff's office.
He has made marijuana grow houses and traffic enforcement prominent targets in his part of his administration and has also dramatically cracked down on professional misconduct in his department.
Also to his credit is a willingness to restrain spending this year in the face of the current public revenue slump -although like all Lee sheriffs in recent decades, Scott has presided over big budget increases as the county population soared.
The sheriff has done a good job of both expanding the jail and of working for alternatives to incarceration.

The sheriff is a constitutional officer elected by the voters to carry out the law enforcement demands of unincorporated Lee County, oversees the Lee County Jail and provides court security.
