B*WITCHED: B*WITCHED (EPIC)

B*witched -- this week's girl pop export from the British Isles -- start off their self-titled debut album with a beguiling, but all too short "jig" that is simply titled "Let's Go (The B*witched Jig)," which quickly moves from any semblance of innovation as it segues into their sunny first single "C'est La Vie." Notwithstanding the fact that their sound incorporates elements of soul and irish jiggery, it's easier to draw comparisons to brother act Boyzone -- one of the members of which is the brother of B*witched twin sisters Edele and Keavy Lynch. Pop enthusiasts will be familiar with the harmonies and gloss straight off, and though "Freak Out" -- which samples heavily from the oft-covered classic "Venus" -- and a few other cuts are entertaining, familiarity breeds contempt, and B*witched are worthy of nothing less. The shadow of Spice hangs heavy here, but a better reference point is All Saints -- with whom they share a fondness for matching outfits, a now tiresome desire to be taken seriously, and an utter lack of zest.
