AMERICAN BEAUTIES

B*Witched are in New York and they're gagging for a bit of Irish stew. Donna Armstrong flies to the rescue...

By the time our plane touches down on Long Island, New York, it's 8pm and the airport is busier than a Westlife shop signing. Like most New Yorkers, Barry, our executive chauffeur, is ready to indulge in a little conversation. "Where are you from? Why are you here? You speak very good English..." Eh? Barry is impressed when we tell him we are in New York to catch up with B*Witched. "They're a girl band from Ireland..." we begin before Bazz quickly cuts us off. "B*Witched!" he cries. "The four girls? The cute girls? My little ones love them!" Bingo! The vibe is good. New York loves B*Witched - but is the feeling mutual?

"I'm sick," coos Lindsay as she strolls into a room at the Marriott Hotel, which has been transformed into the girls' hair and make-up studieo. Sinead is sitting in the make-up chair, Edele's having her hair done and Keavy is strangling a copy of Smash Hits. "Oh my gosh, we have been away from home for soooo long," she exclaims flicking straight to the single reviews. "Can you believe it? We haven't even heard Robbie's new song or Ronan's new album yet."

All of the girls, except Lindsay, who has a touch of the flu, look tanned, happy, and very healthy. "We've had a really great time," smiles Edele. "It's great in America 'cos you can go on tour for two months. At home, you're lucky if you go for two weeks."
"We are a little tired today though," confesses Keavy. "We had the end of tour party last night. We lost track of time a bit and we didn't crawl into bed 'til 3am," she yawns. "But I don't mind - it was great fun." For the past two-and-a-half months, B*Witched have been the headline act on the Nickelodeon Tour and tonight marks their second-to-last show. But before we get too excited about this evening's big event it's time for the girls to put their best smiles on for a quick photoshoot with the Hits...

"This is where we're performing tonight," explains Edele, as we arrive at Jones Beach. "Then we go home," cries Keavy, squishing the sand between her toes. While it's clear the girls love America, they're obviously missing home. "It always happens this way," explains Sinead. "We ove America and we've had an amazing time, but after two months all you want to do is go home."
"I really hate the food here," whines Lindsay, munching on a greasy hot dog and chips.
"We're never ready for the food in America," explains Sinead. "I always think, 'It'll be okay this year,' and it's not. You eat burgers and pizza 'cos you know they're going to taste how they should."

With all the chips scoffed, the Cokes drunk and the hot dogs demolished, we stumble across the burning beach. And with enough sand to fill the Millenium Dome (twice), tanned lifeguards who look like they've just stepped off a Baywatch set and glorious sun-soaked skies, the girls are in their element.

At the moment, silver scooters, pretzels, and cookie dough are at the top of B*Witched's "What we love about America" list. "And the White House," adds Lindsay. "And Niagra FAlls was amazing," chorus Edele and Keavy. And then there are the concerts they've seen while on the road...
Edele: Did we tell you we saw Britney and Christina in concert?
Sinead: Christina was brilliant. Her voice sounds like it is on the album - amazing.
Keavy: Britney had a lot more production on her tour, but in my opinion she got a little bit lost in it all.
Edele: It was a shame 'cos some of the people with us went away saying "Britney needed all that 'cos she couldn't pull it off herself."
Sinead: And she can. She does have talent and she has a great stage prescense.
Um, girls, speaking of concerts, don't you think we should be going somewhere?

After a packed afternoon hanging out with lifeguards - and one fully-clothed dip in the sea - the girls drag us along to Jones Beach Amphitheater where the fans are gathering and the bands are chilling.
"All the bands on the tour have been great fun," Edele tells us at dinner. "Sister2Sister were here for a while and we love them, but they're busy touring with Britney now."
"And it's been great to catch up with LFO. They're very down to earth guys, a lot like us," adds Keavy.
After the A-Teens and a bundle of up-and-coming American bands have rocked the stage, the lights go down for B*Witched. And when they burst through the curtains in 'N Sync-style bubble vests, the crowd erupts. "Hello, New York!" yells Sinead. After dozens of costume changes (very little denim!), slick routines and all the classics, the girls close the show with their brand new American hit, Mickey.
"We want to say one thing in Smash Hits," Edele tells us later. "We want to say sorry to the fans if they're disappointed we're only releasing Mickey in America. It just doesn't make sense to release it back home 'cos Lolly's just done it. And it's from the movie Bring-It-On, which is No1 in the box office over here."
Once the apologies are recorded, B*Witched climb back on the tour bus. "Thank you so much for coming to see us," they all cheer. "We'll see you in a few days when we get home."
"I'm going home to cook a roast chicken," giggles Sinead.
"Irish chicken stew!" cries Keavy. And with that the girls are off - off to finish casting their spell on the States.
