As a painter applies colour to a canvas, Linda Shumas shapes music. Her pallette is rich in hue, drawing on influences, both ethnic and cultural. Through her pictures Linda at times speaks softly, at other times boldly, and at all times preserves the importance of melody and emotion.
A native of West Vancouver, Linda has been playing piano since the age of seven. Although she holds a degree in piano performance from University of Victoria and studied composition at Vancouver City College, she considers herself to be largely self-taught. She recieved the Jean Couthard Prize for original composition in 1978, before she had studied composition formally. Linda conjures a unique style of structured improvisation that harkens to the lyricism of Chopin and Liszt. |
