What to expect this year...
Core Knowledge
Downtown Elementary is the only school in our district with the Core Knowledge curriculum. As part of this curriculum your child will be learning about subjects such as Christopher Columbus, The Seven Continents, Winter Holidays Around the World, National Symbols, Presidents, Living and Non-Living Things, Plants, and Animals. Your child will be assigned projects dealing with some of the Core Knowledge subjects.
Homework
Your child will begin bringing homework home the second week of school. The homework will be sent home on Mondays. Your child will have until Friday to complete the homework. However, all homework is due on Friday morning. If you have any questions about the work, please let me know. Homework is an important way that you can help your child practice the skills we are learning in class.
T.I.G.E.R. Binder
Each student in our class will be given a TIGER Binder. TIGER stands for Today I've Got Everything Ready. This is an organizational binder that will facilitate home/school communication. All money, newsletters, homework, completed work, fliers, project descriptions, etc... will be organized in this binder. If the binder should become lost or torn, it will be the families responsibility to replace it. I have used home/school binders for the past three years and have had a wonderful response from my families.
Absences and Tardies
Please make sure that your child arrives to school on time. This helps a child feel less stressed and helps promote a positive attitude. However, if your child is tardy, you will have to check him/her in through the office. If your child is absent, a written excuse is required. The school district has a strict policy regarding absences. This policy is outlined in the school handbook. Excessive tardies and absences will cause a magnet student to be brought up for Magnet Review. Repeated reviews can result in dismissal from the Magnet Program.
Sight Words
Once homework begins, your child will be responsible for learning 5 new sight words a week. In addition to the homework activites, we will be doing several activities in class in order to help the students learn these words. However, your help at home is vital to your child's success. The students will be tested on these words. By the end of the year, we will have covered between 170 and 185 words. These words will be in the reading material we use, charts we make and read, word making activities, and writing activities just to name a few of the ways we use these words. You can access the words on this site under the heading: This Week's Words
Dress Code
Please remember that students are required to come to school in uniform attire EVERYDAY. Uniform attire consists of a collared shirt (plain white, yellow, red, dark blue, or light blue-no stripes or patterns); shorts, pants, skirts, skorts, or jumpers (khaki or navy blue); athletic shoes (preferably with white soles); and a belt if the clothing has belt loops.
Transportation
Please remember to send a note in the event that your child's method of transportation changes. We can not go by a child's word of mouth and the office does not accept transportation changes over the phone. We will not send a child home a different way without a signed note. This is for your child's safety. Written notice is also required in the event that a child is suspended off of the bus. The parent must notify the teacher of the suspension and of the date when the child will be allowed back on the bus. Thank you for your cooperation in this very important matter.
Parent Involvement
Parent involvement is very important to your child's success. Ask your child what he/she did in school. Please check the TIGER binder every afternoon when your child gets home. Please read to your child each evening and help him/her with the homework and sight words. When you let your child know that school is important, it goes a long way in helping him/her to be successful.
