Susannah Longstreth VanGilder

THE FAMILY OF FREDERICK VANGILDER AND SUSANNAH LONGSTRETH

of Monongalia and Marion County, West Virginia

Frederick VanGilder, son of Jacob VanGilder and Anna Margaret Kibler, was born on February 22, 1794 in Frederick City, Maryland. On June 24, 1817 he married Susannah Longstreth, daughter of Revolutionary War Captain Philip Longstreth and Salome Heaton. Susannah was born on June 24, 1800 in Allegany County, Maryland.

Monongalia County records indicate that Frederick worked in Ices Ferry Iron Works on Cheat before he helped establish the Piney Run Iron Furnace circa 1840. Financially backed by his brother, William VanGilder, Frederick and his sister, Sarah VanGilder Reed, organized the Mt. Zion Methodist Church, with Frederick giving the land for the first log church and cemetery. The deed for the cemetery lot is dated March 19, 1846. Frederick and his brother, James VanGilder were lay preachers. Today, the church is still in existence in the Winfield District, Marion County, West Virginia and both the older section as well as the newer cemetery is the final resting place for hundreds of VanGilder descendants.

Frederick VanGilder died in Marion County on Christmas Day, December 25, 1858. Susannah remained in Forksburg, Marion County, West Virginia until her death on May 29, 1880. Both Frederick and Susannah are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Winfield District, Marion County, West Virginia.

Also the countless network "cousins" who have donated their lines to our effort. Finally, to my own family--parents, aunts, cousins, cousins once removed--who have given support, stories, and old photos.
