| McNeill Family of Robeson Co., NC & Marion Co., SC |
| This family deals with the Scotch migration to NC in the 1700s. Sailing up the Cape Fear River at Wilmington on flat boats to the area that is now present day Cumberland County, NC. There were literally hundreds that came from the time the "Argyle" Colony was founded. They had colorful names and solid work ethics to carve out the wilderness. Of all the family lines I have researched, this one has been the hardest and the most confusing. I welcome any feedback or corrections. Jane Campbell born 1-1-1720 in Argyleshire Scotland married William McNeill in Scotland. They had 5 children. Some sources say that William died in Scotland, and Jane sailed with her children to America. Some sources say that William came with Jane, and died here. Whichever is the truth, Jane did come losing 1 child on the voyage over. We don't know where Jane lived before the Rev. War, but I am assuming in Cumberland County, possible with relatives or friends. We do know that she knew Neill McNeill, who was responsible for bringing many Scots over to the colony. Neill McNeill, a widower, had children of his own and after the Rev. War, Jane Campbell McNeill and Neill McNeill married. That made a family of hers, his, and 2 more they had together. Although Neill had land in Cumberland County, NC, they decided to live on his land in Robeson County between Ashpole Preb. Church (outside Rowland, NC) and the S.C. state line. My line of descent is thru Jane Campbell and William McNeill. To see all the people and dates involved, please click on the Ancestor Chart above. |
