WELL DONE to Sudbury Dramatic Society National Drama Festival Winners 2001 with Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose |
| A classic, sweaty courtroom
drama set away from the splendour of the court itself, in
the claustrophobic confines of a single room on a hot
summer's day. A jury has heard all the defence arguments for a teenager accused of murdering his father, and received instructions from the presiding judge. They adjourn to consider their verdict. It seems an open and shut case - the boy is surely guilty. However, their first ballot gives a surprise result. 11 to 1..... One man has 'reasonable doubt' about the boy's guilt. Just one man. A strong and compassionate figure, he puts forward his arguments and gradually spreads doubt among the others. The motivations of each of the jury are dramatically revealed in turn, leading to the final conclusion in this tight, tense and absorbing drama..Sidney Lumet's memorable film of this piece is an acclaimed classic starring Henry Fonda, Lee J Cobb and Ed Marshall. SDS take it back to its first home on stage with a highly experienced cast keen to live this compelling story.
