This was question #10 on the survey at classmates.com It was a short answer question and the answers were similiar.
Tim Brown answered: Elect a 7 person committee by majority vote. Nominees for committee could be class officers or their selected volunteer. The committee should have annual contact with each other that is followed by an annual update posted on the class website by a specified date. Work on a more consistent and frequent address / email update. Allow committee authority to select a firm date for every 5 years, whether it be Memorial Day weekend, July 4th, Labor Day, Canal Days, or just another weekend day during the summer that doesn't conflict with holidays. Allow committee authority to select an event by committee majority. Send out initial contact AT MINIMUM in January for the year the event is planned, giving basic information and requesting funds no later than March 31 of that same year. Add at least a $5 per person surcharge for every event that goes straight into a "reunion planning fund". Planning will be much easier with money in hand and a committee of several people to decide and implement the event. One other suggestion is to alternate types of events every 5 years. on the years ending in ***6 have an informal picnic, and on the years ending in ***1 (the hallmark) have a catered, formal event. Consistency of dates and consensus of a committee with authority will be the key to making each event attendance increase. Finally, I will say the Class of 1981 has had GREAT REUNIONS every 5 years, mostly thanks to the few who have organized and strived on our behalf. The same few individuals should not have to do all the work every time, so maybe there can be a rotation of committee members if they chose. Many other LHS classes have never held a successful reunion! Our class members have done a great job of staying close, and I hope we can organize now so we stay close in the years to come
Cathy Criss answered: Set the date early so people can make plans to attend. Every five years we know there will be a reunion, we just don't know the "when" part therefore it is difficult for some to plan ahead without more notice. There is never a good time for everyone so those who can make it will. There shouldn't have to be gimmicks to get people to attend. We as a class should want to have time every five years to visit with each other. It's a time to learn who is where, doing what and reflect back on our high school years. The memories will last a lifetime.
Jenni Harris answered: Unfortunately, everyone will never come. But the more ownership each person takes in it, the more likely they will be to come. Somehow we have to get everyone, or at least most everyone, to get involved. A committee needs to be elected, and they need to start planning two years in advance. Money absolutely needs to be established now so that it can be used in the planning stages. As class treasurer, I would be happy to fulfill that commitment, but I would like someone else's name on the account as well. We need to really make our 30th something special!
Julia Stojkic answered: Timing is everything. Summer is better for me because during spring/fall/winter, my 5 children have weekend sports (travel sports, etc.) Weekends only work for me in the summer. What's exciting about this reunion is that several people from CA will be able to attend because they were coming to town anyway for Labor Day weekend. If we would like to include more out-of-town folks, I don't think we could have picked a better weekend. I would like for the event to take place the same weekend 5 years from now.
Trina Trumbo answered: If the reunion was held on the same weekend every 5 years (i.e. Canal Days), more classmantes might be able to attend.
Robyn Watson answered: could make reservations at a nice hotel in indy or some where and use the banquet hall for our catered dinner and then those who choose not to drink can swim and if anyone would want to do a carriage ride around the circle could, maybe if we can get enough money take on a show or something fun............ or a trip to brown county renting cabins or take a riverboat dinner cruise in cincinnati where we can all have fun and maybe rent motel rooms nearby for dancing or just hangin out
Lisa Walters Jones answered: Motivation depends on the person's interest to attend. If seeing the classmates ranks high as a priority, maybe more will attend. Definite planning needs to be done with ALOT more teamwork from everyone. The event needs to be planned several months out and the arrangements made and confirmed way before the event is scheduled. It should be fun for everyone. Various jobs need to be delegated. I think a drawing for a prize at the end of the event would be fun. I think the website is useful but, we need to constantly keep it updated so all classmates can find information. This way they will know about the reunion before we actually find them. We need to make sure everyone knows about it, regardless of where they are, and the plans are exciting enough that everyone will want to attend. Some people have NEVER attended our class reunions....why? They simply have no interest in seeing their classmates again, or there's nothing to draw them in. Maybe we could brainstorm together and make the reunions something people actually CAN'T miss! I will continue to update and maintain the website, as I get new information, but I need help from everyone. Organization as a group to get things moving would be ideal. I would like for us to pick a place that's a bit more fun than good ole Cambridge. Anyone ever thought of an actual trip somewhere together, say a cruise or something dramatic?? We all could have valuable, exciting ideas if you would take the time to give your constructive input, and follow through with money, committment and help with the plans. If we plan early enough and follow through, the future reunions could be something spectacular. Hopefully the next reunion will be a great one. Thanks for your time. Dont' forget to email me with updates and info
