Disclaimer: I own neither Gateau nor Marron-chan, but I do own this green jelly bean and the universe as you know it, but mostly the jelly bean...
If It Doesn't
Marron pushed open the thick curtains of the window. Standing silently in his white robes, he watched as the sun rose over unnamed hills. As each minute passed, golden rays stretched like fingers into the gray horizon, pushing away the night's darkness.

Something rustled behind him. Without turning around, Marron could picture his love waking, shifting, and sitting up to stare at him.

"Good Morning Gateau," he spoke quietly. There was no noise in the ancient inn, a sure sign that Carrot was not yet awake.

"Mmm, too early," Gateau murmured, "cold too, come back to bed."

"I want to see this, why don't you get up?" From the corner of one eye, Marron saw his friend frown, a look just a hair away from pouting. The pretend dejection of Gateau brought a small smile to his face before the sunrise once again claimed full attention.

Running a hand through his short blond hair, Gateau slowly rose from the bed, leaving it disheveled as he approached the still form silhouetted against the window. Slipping a muscled arm around Marron's waist, he pulled the smaller man against his bare chest. The mage relaxed in the strong arms that held him, allowing himself to be supported.

They stood there in silence until Marron spoke, "Do you see it?"

A few months before, Gateau would have thought only of the obvious but his time spent with Marron had greatly improved his grasp of deeper meanings. Now he looked out seeking something beyond the sun. However, not being able to think too deeply at such an early hour, he went with the first words that sprang to mind and hoped Marron would give him the correct answer.

"It's beautiful."

"That is true."

"Its bright."

"Also true."

"What do
you see?"

"All the colors. Each one is different. You never know what the sun will bring with its blinding glory. The happiness of pink, the despair of blue. Each day holds uncertainty, and one day, the sun may not rise at all." Marron's voice had taken on a strange sadness as he spoke.

"The sun will always rise."

Marron spun to face him, placing his arms on Gateau's, trying to hang on to something solid and real as his mind wandered on unstable ground.

"Are you sure? What if the darkness is too heavy, if the fragile balance shifted one bit, would the sun still rise?"

"Night and day are forever. Tomorrow will be the same as today." Gateau stared as Marron seemed to process and debate his words. Where had this conversation come from? Surely Marron wasn't sacred of the dark...

"Each day we hunt sorcerers, fight desperate battles. Carrot, Tira, all of us lay our lives on the line. You've seen things. You know, anything can happen...and nothing is forever."

"The sun
will rise."

"But what if we're not here to see it?"

The true issue was revealed. A crystalline tear streaked down Marron's face, years of wondering, fearing, insecurity condensed into one little droplet reflecting in the morning's light.

Gateau pulled the shorter man against him to speak. His words were only for Marron, not whispers to an empty room.

"The sun rise is beautiful, and if I don't live to see another one I won't be sorry my love, because I spent this one with you."

Notes From the Miko: Kinda short, I'm working on one's that are longer, but I got distracted when Subaru-san kept talking about how beautiful the sun rise was one morning...of corse, then he told me if you stare directly at it you can see spots...he's so poetic...please review, maybe it will give him something else to stare at.
It would be so kind of you to leave a review in my guestbook, that it would.
