| To the left is Salem Commons, and to the right is a statue of Roger Conant, the first settler in Salem in 1626. The area was originally named "Naumkeag", and it was then renamed "Salem" which means "peace" (apparently they got along well with the Native Americans at that time). When I took the picture of Roger, there was a street light in the background...I didn't like it so I cloned it out. There's a plaque on the pedestal of the statue. It's hard to read, but it says: "I was a means, through grace assisted me to stop the flight of those few that then were here with me, and that by my utter denial to go away with them, who would have gone either for England, or mostly for Virginia."
