This myth begins with a father and a son, Daedalus and Icarus. Daedalus was known for being a skilful artificer. He was known for building numberless winding passages and turning opening into one another. However, one task was too risky. The King Minos asked Daedalus to build him a labyrinth for his pleasure. But after the favour of the king, he was shut up in a tower. He tired to escape but there was no way out because it was on an island, and the king permitted no one to sail without them be carefully searched first. Daedalus thought to himself how would they escape without it being a crime against the king? He knew that the king had control of the water but not of the land so he decided to build wings for himself and his son Icarus. He built it out of wrought feathers together, beginning with the smallest and adding larger. The larger ones he secured with thread and the smaller with wax. Before the trip Daedalus told his son not to fly to close to the sun because if he did his wings would melt and he would fall to his death. But being a kid he thought that he was unstoppable. So when he started the flight he went closer to the sun. The sun god was angry with this so he melted the wings and Icarus fell to this death.(Bulfinch,1995-2003) |
