Chapter 1
Taking up the small digital camera she wore about her neck, she began taking pictures.
She never knew what happened when suddenly with a little yelp of shock fell down a hole. The hole was black laced with tiny pinpoints of light then...nothing.
Sometime later Hikari regained consciousness to find herself in a shop that sold ancient artifacts.
Gah, where am I? she thought.
The shopkeeper moving over to the thirteen year old doesn't know what to make of it. How did this girl get in his shop? He had locked up.
"Hey, how'd you get here?" he asks.
Hikari looks up at him, her mouth moving but no sound issued forth. The shopkeeper frowned then helped her to her feet.
It was during this when Hikari's eyes fell on the objects. It was all in pieces like a puzzle with strange symbols on it. The shopkeeper saw what it was she was looking at.
"Is that for real?" Hikari asks pointing at the object.
"Yes. Its a puzzle," said the shopkeeper with a shrug. "Can't get anyone to purchase it though."
"Can I have it then?"
Hikari didn't know why she wanted it, only that something about it called to her. The shopkeeper shrugged again, reaching out to take it from its place and giving it to Hikari.
Taking the strange object Hikari feels a strange power emanating from it but is confused about it. The shopkeeper helps her outside where he stands by the open door before her.
"Have you eaten anything?" he asks. His answer is answered by the dull grumbling sound coming from Hikari's belly. She grabs at her stomach, a sweatdrop appearing on the side of her face. The shopkeeper chuckles.
"If you can wait here, I'll lock up and treat you to a meal," he said.
"Okay."
Hikari waits as the shopkeeper enters the store again. She holds the puzzle in her hands the urge to try and solve it very strong.
Two minutes later, the shopkeeper returned. He locks up and turned to look at Hikari with a smile,
"Here, come along with me," he said beginning to move away from the door after locking it. Hikari follows him.
In the shopkeeper's home, Hikari had just finished her third helping. For some reason she was starving. Looking over at him, Hikari saw the grin lurking there and the twinkling of his eyes.
"What?" she blurts out. The shopkeeper's grin gets wider.
"Hungry, weren't ya?"
Hikari, looking down at the empty plate, a large sweatdrop forming as she nods.
"Heh, don't worry about it. If you want I have an extra room so you can spend the night. then decide what to do tomorrow.>
"Thank you," Hikari said.
That night, alone in the room Hikari's thoughts go to Gatomon. It was something she has been doing since arriving in this strange place.
Hikari gets to her feet saddened while her thoughts were on Gatomon and Tai, her big brother.
"Oh Tai, where are you," she mourned.
Her attention now turns to the strange puzzle pieces she laid on the bed. Taking them up, she doesn't know what to make of them. With a shrug, she began putting them together slowly at first but moving faster. it was as if something possessed her, helping her to piece together the puzzle. she couldn't understand it but finally she had completed the puzzle.
"Whoa!" Hikari gasps now holding a pyramid shaped object in her hand. She turns it over in her hands staring. "But what is it?"
The puzzle begins to glow right in her hands. Then something strange happnes--Hikari seems to be seeing a figure she doesn't know who coming toward her.
"Hello Hikari Kamiya," the voice says. It was a voice that seemed to be coming from the figure. A figure shrouded in light so that Hikari can't really see it.
"B--But how did---?"
"How I knew your name?" the voice said. "I know you because there is something we must do, digidestined of light."
Hikari fell over at that, shocked and surprised.
"but enough of such, an evil is coming Hikari and only we can stop it."
"Evil? Do you know what kind of evil?" she asks.
"I do not know but this evil will span this world and many others. Yours included."
"Then how are we to stop it?" Hikari asked. The thought of this evil made her want to do everyything in her power to help and stop it. "I want to help."
The figure nods, "You and I will be partners. In this world young people play an ancient game called the Shadown Games using small calds. They call it Duel Monsters. I will teach you to play and together we will defeat the evil that stands on the brink of overthrowing this world and others."
Hikari nods, her thoughts on her brother Tai and her friends. Someday she hope to return to them but for now...
"You must return now," the voice said.
Hikari blinked only to find herself back in the room. Getting to her feet, sharp stabbing pains emanating from her legs making her fealize that she had been sitting in that postion for a long time. With a soft moan of pain she walks, pins and needles stabbing in her legs still. Her thoughts, however, were far away on what she had learned.
With the blood circulating in her legs, Hikari moves over to the bed and climbs in. She is tired now. Before long, her eyes close and she is fast asleep.
NEXT MORNING
Hikari wakes to the smell of sausage cooking. She gets out of bed and left the room following the smell. Turning a corner, she found herself standing before a doorway where the shopkeeper was standing before a stove. the smell of cooking sausage was stronger as Hikari sighs loudly causing the shopkeeper to turn at that soft sound.
"Ah Hikari, good morning," he grins at her before removing the sausage from the stove to a plate next to him. "Breakfast is ready."
Hikari blinks, coming into the kitchen and sitting down at the table.
"Yes. Thank you," she said. Nodding, the shopkeeper turns to prepare a plate. Looking at him Hikari wonders about his name before dropping her eyes to the millenium puzzle now about her neck. It was the same puzzle. she reaches up to finger it nervously even as she realizes the discussion between the mysterious figure and herself last night. the shopkeeper places a plate before her saying,
"Here you go Hikari. Amy my name is Odion."
Blinking, Hikari nearly falls from her seat in shock,
"H--How did you know what...?"
"...what you were thinking?" Odion smiles. "I was once a close friend to Marik until he disappeared without a clue. At one point, he had been completely taken over by evil but one had freed him. After being freed, he and his sister returned to Egypt a family once again. And I "Odion began sadly.
"What happened Odion to Marik?" she asked and the sadness in his eyes was back as he remembered.
"I don't know. He and his sister disappeared but Istar revealed that evil was returning and that the Light was coming also," he answered. At the mention of that word, Hikari nearly jumped out of her skin and the chair she was sitting in. Odion smiled, "Yes Hikari, Istar knew about you through her Millennium Necklace. On your arrival I was to present you with the Millennium Puzzle."
Odion's eyes travel to the Puzzle about Hikari's neck, nodding.
"And I have done so.."
Hikari's hand traveled to the puzzle about her neck then dropped. Odion smiled at her reaction.
"Yes Hikari. But I'm also here to protect the wearer of that puzzle."
Later that day found Hikari strolling through the streets, deep in thought. All around her young people were either talking or playing duel monsters. her hand moved to her pocket where a pack of cards she gotten from Odion were safely tucked there. She remembered back when he gave them to her...
FLASHBACK
With Hikari thoughtfully occupied, Odion had gotten to his feet moving over to a cupboard. He opened the cupboard and removed a set of cards, going back to Hikari and setting the cards before her. That movenemtn roused her. She blinked, staring at the careds then at Odion.
"What are those? Some kind of playing cards?" she had asked.
"You might say that," he began. "These are your duel monster cards."
"But, I don't know how to play."
Odion had smiled at that, winking at her,
"Don't worry, soon you will but there is someone else who will teach you." His glance had gone to the puzzle and flicked away.
Hikari wondered about that even as she left Odion's and began walking.
END FLASHBACK
"Hey! Gimme back my card!" a voice came to her ears taking her out of her own thoughts.
Hikari ran toward the sound of the voice.
"Heh Heh Heh. How can a little twerp like you have such a rare card as this Blue Eyes?" another mean voice spoke even as Hikari turned a corner. What she saw shocked her.
A young boy of elevan or so was trying to grab a small card with the picture of a dragon on it.
Hikari moves over to the bully and takes the card from him.
"Hey!" the bully protested. "Give that back."
"It doesn't belong to you," Hikari declared glaring at the bully. She didn't like bullies and this one was rubbing her the wrong way. The bully glared back angrily,
"Girl, you just made a BIIG mistake."
A glow came from the puzzle as Hikari felt herself change a bit. She looked like a different version of herself except older and a look of confidence on her face. Even her hair had changed slightly.
"Then duel me for this card," Hikari heard herself say.
"fine!" the bully yells. He moved before her, his hand going into his pocket and pulling out a deck of Duel Monsters' cards.
Hikari didn't understand what those cards were about and yet, for some strange reason, she knew how to play this game.
The two with the eleven year old entered a building where other kids were, many of which were playing duel monsters as well.
Hikari and the bully entered a sort of arena each moving to one side. The eleven year old stood off to the side slightly behind Hikari observing the game about to progress.
"Let's duel!" Hikari and the bully said together. The duel had begun.
SOMETIME LATER
The bully stomps away in anger having lost the duel.
"Next time girl! Next time I WILL win!" the bully yelled on stomping out. The eleven year old runs to Hikari, his precious blue eyes clutched in his hands.
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" he exclaimed as he ran to her and she passed the card over to him and he stood there thanking her and clutching the card.
"Don't worry about it," she said smiling at him gently. "By the way, my name is Hikari."
"Uokuba," the boy responded. "You're really good Hikari."
"Thanks," she said with a soft blush. Hikari began moving off, Mokuba following as they exited the game room and out of the building. It would seem that Hikari had acquired a friend in Mokuba.
