REVIEW BY BLUEGRASS NOW MAY 1999! Visit the local bluegrass clubs and festivals around the country for a while and it becomes pretty evident pretty soon there's a lot more talent out there than what shows up on the radio and in the record racks at the major outlets. The talent is out there, whether it makes it to the major recording labels or not: and it can be real hot uncovering it. Limited Edition is one of those very pleasant surprises that makes you glad you took the time to listen, even grateful for the opportunity. These five guys out of Warren, Ohio do it all well, from playing and singing good bluegrass music to producing, mixing, and engineering the final product (with Rich Stevens of Rich Soung Recording Studio) to even booking appearances and selling records. Dan Garrett plays banjo and sings lead and tenor vocals; Rick McCarty: guitar and lead and tenor vocals; Jim Meadows: base guitar and powerful base vocals, Dave Garrett: mandolin and fine husky lead and baritone vocals, and Chet Hogue: Dobro. There's a healthy representation of the old traditional sound here, like "Worried Man Blues:, along with some of the modern traditional bluegrass and country pieces that received airplay for a time: Michael Martin Murphy's "Carolina In The Pines", Vince Gill's "High Lonesome Sound", Larry Cordle's "Highway Forty Blues", and The Pure Prairie League's "Amie". Limited Edition is exceptional on acapella Gospel harmony; so good, in fact, that they should come out with an all acapella Gospel album. The band performs a healthy inspiring Dan Garrett arrangement on Curtis Mayfield's classic, "People Get Ready" that's worth the price of the album right there. |
