2004 NEWS LETTER
Greetings from your Alumni Association! Once again we are happy to report that due to the support from former graduates of LHS and LCS we are once again able to give out scholarships to graduating seniors. The 2004 recipients were Jacinda St. Pierre and Nate Menifield. They both graduated from what is now known as Limestone Community School, named after the high school and elementary schools were combined. This year Beverly Derrah has been recognized publicly for her 35 years of service to the school department.
Because 10 years have passed since the closure of Loring Air Force Base, it may be a good time to touch on some of the positive things that are happening in our area. Of course our school is much smaller with around 350 students, some of the building has been taken up by the MSSM (Maine School of Science and Mathematics) and the former elementary building is now a dorm for these students. There are now 1146 people employed at Loring Commerce Centre. Some of the businesses there include Dept of Labor RS Info Systems; DFAS (Defense Finance center); Maine Military Authority (repairing military vehicles); Loring Job Corps; US Fish and Wildlife (Wildlife Refuge); Sitel (calling center); Pattison Sign Group (making large signs, Toyota for one); Telford Group (Aircraft MRO); Maine Winter Sports Center (main office for the ski centers that are in Aroostook County - such as the 10th Mountain in Fort Kent that hosted the World Cup Biathlon last March); and many smaller private businesses. One of these is a new business called Maine Street Flour, founded and operated by a 1999 graduate of LCS, Paul Durepo II.
Since there has been quite a bit of interest in the Limestone Centennial Booklet printed in 1969 for the 100th Anniversary Celebration and no longer any copies left, the Limestone-Caswell Historical Society has a reprint of this booklet for sale along with the 25-year update printed in 1994. These are available $10.00 for 100 year; $5.00 for 25 year update. If you are interested in either or both, please include a check to the Limestone-Caswell Historical Society for the amount plus $2.50 each for shipping costs, and be sure the include your mailing address. We will see that they get your order.
Another project that is in the works is a new website - a 1980 graduate of LHS has offered to help with this and we are optimistic that this will be completed soon!!! There seems to be some interest in another banquet possibly in 2008 which is the 100th anniversary of the first graduating class of LHS.
