Why I think the world... is going to hell... in a handbasket....
In a word... OUR kids. The toys that are coming out lately don't actually teach the girls anything except to A. be a woman of the night or B. Have lot of babies. YES there are toys for extremely younger girls that teach them other things (ie: restaurant business, owning and operating your own retail/salon.) HOWEVER. Making dolls (which every girls plays with.. don't try to deny it) that look like miniature prostitutes? Yeahhh Great message to send to your budding daughter. If I dress like I cost about 20$ an hour, I will be as cool and popular as Barbie. I don't totally blame Mattel however. If you look at the popular fashions for younger girls, we are making them appear older and older. There isn't a problem with girls wanting to look cute.. there is when they want to look like something from a Britney video. I think maybe Mattel should tone down their Barbie clothing... make it more casual and less *Oooh look at me I'm Paris Hilton*-ish. I'm just afraid when the little girl playing with a doll who dresses like a hooker grows up... she's going to be confused, and might have horrible low self esteem.
I was thinking, why not make the boxes that the dolls come in have a warning label?? Might cause altered perceptions of what adulthood is like. No Your child will not be an astronaut just because she plays with this doll. Yeah, I'm overly opinionated... and I don't get paid for it! Moving on... boy's toys. Alright. We know boys like destruction. Just certain toys and games are a little too extreme. I actually enjoy Diego toys (way younger audience) because they teach the kids about animals and a different language. The toys that kill each other and bleed or the kits you make to make monsters that have blood? Yeahhh.... That's kinda... wrong. OK. Boys like gross stuff right? Why not make a human model that comes apart (maybe not anatomically correct for younger kids though) and they can gross out with educational crap? Sheesh. Wrestling toys don't bother me as much, I used to date a 20 something year old who played with them (yes... I dated him) so i grew used to it. They also don't have blood packs inside that spurt everywhere either. I guess maybe I am old fashioned. I want the dolls to be Victorian in their clothing choices (ok no high necks) and boys to play with wooden cars. Meh OKies.. enough of my opinions!
