This adorable pony, Tootsie Roll, is one of our latest additions. As you can see, my daughter is absolutely thrilled about the new mount. Tootsie and Tony are enamored with one another. Tony, being the gentleman, allows Tootsie to have the run-in shed often while he stands outside.
We also have added a little Jersey heifer named Sweetpea to our backyard. Veal buyers didn't show much interest in her as she is a lightweight at45 lbs, and she rode quite peacefully in a friend's van back from the auction Tuesday. She eats like a champ, and I plan to introduce her to grain tomorrow. I plan to add that extra step to our milk 3 times a day program. That is a lesson to all that know me....never carpool with me to auction or you may have a calf riding home with you before you know it! Thanks to Caroline and Chloe for their understanding!
Our big challenge over the weekend was to transport a huge Angus bull from my in-law's farm to my parent's farm. As I visited friends from Newville, that Angus bull just walked right on the livestock trailer with minimal guidance from my husband and my father-in-law. Whew...I always breathe a sigh of relief when an animal that size is moved. Now we can just hope for that same cooperation in a few months when he returns.
Only about 12 more days until our Barred Rocks chicks arrive. We'd love to work with chickens on a grander scale. I love that I have some hens that can free range in with the Jersey calf. What a mutualistic relationship...the chickens spread the manure and control the flies that sometimes pester the calf.
