| She would just quietly watch us playing. My brother and I had a childhood filled with so many strangers and friends that having her there was no big deal. We were used to her silent staring at us, and too young to realize that she was not of this world. She always had the same shirt on. It was one of those 60's jobs with the butterfly sleeves and flowery looking trim, and her hair was long and blonde. She would just stand close by and say nothing. The house was a small distance outside of town, and in the early 60's it had belonged a young doctor who's wife had been murdered in the children's room. There had been a great deal of controversy over the whole ordeal, and much to my parents surprise, rent was cheap. The house was pretty amazing. zzzthey had the old fashioned captains beds built into the floor, and those were the very ones that we slept on every night. It never seemed odd to me at my young age that she sometimes stood or sat, in the closet at night and watched us as we slept. There she would be in the darkness and quiet....just watching. She never felt threatening to us, but she apparently scared some others who found something strange about the room when they would check on us at night, or sleep over. There were relatives that refused to go anywhere near the room. The only other person who ever saw her was my mother. She was gardening in the back yard and looked up to see a strange looking woman standing in the bedroom window. We were in the room playing and suddenly mother had burst in, and started asking questions about the woman she had just seen. We told her that she was always there. My mother was pretty frightened and packed us up for grandma's house. She never wanted to be alone in that house after that. My mom is usually sensitive to the unusual. Recently, I asked my mother about the weird quiet woman we had seen so many years ago. She remembered her well. I wonder if she is still there, or if maybe she has found peace at last. | ||||||||||||
