Tyme to Shyne
The story of the 20 year old Jamal Barrow's rise to Shyne's fame is a tale of both cursed hardships and divine fortune. The Belieze born rapper who was named "Shine" by his cuzzin before he hooked up with Badboy is a love-child who politically prominent father,Dean Barrow, chose to ignore Jamal existence instead of nuturing his potential. In and out of Juvey,Jamal always found himself walking the thin line between well-being and self-destruction.
At the age of 8,Jamal and his mother moved to Brooklyn,NY, where he was constantly being tempted by mischeif and crime. As he grew older,he beagn to run with the local hoods to fit in, robbing folks to make a name.At the age of `3 he served 8 months in the hall for failed robbery. At the age of 16, he was blasted in the chest with a shotgun following an argument, levaing a six-inch scar on his right shoulder.Eventually, getting shot at arrested and getting into trouble wore thin on Jamal, and he decided to focus more on his education.Soon after his change of heart, he developed an interest in writing raps and began rhyming whenever and wherever he could--no longer known as jamal "the thug" but as Shyne "the MC."
Shyne was initailly discovered outside of A Brooklyn barbershop. When he saw what he thought to be a record label executives getting a haircut,he kicked a few bars to display his skills. One of the execs on hand happened to know connections toP.diddy,as well as other music industry honchos. There was something about shyne's flow, his discriptive lyrics and his nasal, Biggie-like delivery that made shyne sound like a future east-coast street lyricism.Labels from SONY and Interscope to Def Jam were thirsty to recruit the 17 year old new jack to their teams, even without so much of a demo. Finally, after numerous six-figure offers for his services,Shyne chose to record his debut-ablum with Badboy, the label that once had one of Shyne's admitted icons, the Notorios B.I.G."I'm from BK" states shyne."B.I.G--thats the greatest rapper of all time-we all know that."
Shyne's similarities to Biggies has been one of the biggest controversies surrounding the embattled MC since being discovered three years ago.He gravely drawl and heavy intonations are almost identical, yet solemn overtures and Carribean influences are unmistakably, genuinely Shyne. To be honest, even Biggie's
flow was inspired by others, as it constantly evolved, from the amped-up, young thug sound of "party and bulls**t"to the laid back bravado off "Notorious." And shyne has caught much more heat from the haters than other Biggie sound alikes. such as rappers like BBjay and Hostyle (from screwball)
Along with scrutiny, Shyne's sucess has also bred distress he's been targeted in a venomous verse by the Queen Bee ("Notorious KIM") (who needs to quit talkin cuz she all on somebody who dont want her (BIG))
issued a $6 million dollar lawsuit for assaulting a patron at a gym in an altereation during a game of Basketball:been involved in a fatal car crash:and charged with attempted murder for last year's infamout shoot-out along with puffy at "Club NY" in which 3 people where injured. The latter, the most seroius account, almost ruined the completion of his debut,as shyne still awaits trail facing a hefty 25 years in prison
(partly because he already has a felony record) for his part of the fracas.
Perhaps its because he's such a promosing talent or because he's rolling with the next notorios CEO in hip hop,his trouble with the law,or even because he's gotten so much plublicity for a rookie, but his self titled album "Shyne", has been one of the most anticipated LP's of the year. The self remarkable debuted at #5 on the charts with little leadtime and admist fierce competition from Mystikal, Nelly, and Lil'bow wow.Swiflty brearing down on a platinum mark, "Shyne" has become a hit.
"I always knew who I was " proclaims a confident and focused, yet hot tempered Shyne."if a nigga dont believe in himslef, who the fuck gonna believe in him?I used to be sitting there like,'Yo these people don't understand, I done been shot, I done been to jail and ain't been raped, and held my own.But it was all good 'cause they redlly wasn't a conversation that needed to be had:it was more of me just making my music and all that shit Iv'e been through.Just talk about it and keep doing you--real recognize real. It's just like the forst day of high school. You come to school and nobody know who you is, and people gonna try you. They gonna test you:heads ain't gonna give up off the back. You just got to put your gangsta down, and like I said Real recognize real."
His first single "Bad boyz" has taken hip hop to a whole othet level and immedialtley became a hip hop national (and international) anthem.Packed with reggae-induced vocals (courtesy of Mr.Levy), the carribean -flavored cut appeals to a wide audience, captivating the mind, body and soul."My voice is my music"explains Shyne."My soul is in each song.To have people feel my music is to have people feel me, Jamal Barrow"
Lost in all the hoopla regarding Shyne is the emergance of an MC who can actually spit, and has the voice and experience to communicate with an euer-growing popualtion of hip-hop fans who long on reality in their music.Though Shyne is hardly considered positive, his ability to reach his goals despit his abandonment
by his father, his troubled youth and his current legal woes speaks to those who are being reared on the worng side of the tracks. There are a lot more cats in the streets like shyne whose voices will never be heard.
His writing and music reflect the environment in which he belongs to, the people who live at the margins of America.
His next ingle LP "that's gangsta" borrows the classic loop popularized by the NWA's D.O.C in the late 80's classic "Is it funky enough"Similar to the clip for "Bad boyz,"Shyne gives viewers a tour of his hometown:Faltbush,Brooklyn. He even features his mother and granmother in the video, two people who have been influentual in his sucess and continue to inspire the often-troubled rapper.
"My moms be cryin every minute of my sucess:she can't believe it.Especailly from a month ago when she was depressed 'cause people said that shit was going to go down"shares Shyne."She feels good when she hears Angie Martinez (NY's Hot97) say "Yeah I like thats song."She feels good 'cause thats her lil'man she pushed from the womb.Ma dukes is definitley happy.
Despite that hard-as-nails aura Shyne perpetuates in public, it is obvious that he is grateful for  his chance to...shine.Things could be a lot worse and tommorow is never certain,so Shyne lives for the moment. He thanks his fan,his hater, his mom&grandmother, the rappers who inspired and the man who signed him.
"Puff showes me how to make my emotions part of the beats, and that's how you become a musician.I give puff crefit as far as showing a nigga how to flip and bounce shit, and just make music"And as far as the the  legal problems go,shyne is not concerned with the things he cant control.
"Basically, I'm just gald to see my shit is out" he sighs."Other than that, imma keep droppin jointsmshoot some videos and keep making music. That was my battle--just puttin the shyt out"Im glad to see that my people in the streets are feeling it"
