What if...
You awoke to choking smoke and flames
licking at the place you call home?
What if, in those first few seconds,
the fear and terror cloying at your insides,
you realized there was no help coming?

Would you then feel a sense of overwhelming relief
to hear the sirens and air horns coming your way?
What would it mean to know a group
of men and women were there to help save the day?

As a nurse, I cannot help but wonder...
What if those vehicles had just pulled over?
Would a life have been saved
in those precious few moments,
but instead "lost", because of plain ignorance?

What if it were your child who lay beneath
the crumpled remains of a car?
Would you not then break for an Emergency vehicle?
Too many people are just too fickle.

What if the world was a perfect place?
A world filled with love, peace and grace.
No fires, no accidents, no heart failures,
no death.
No dangers to our "heroes",
not a soul taking a last breath.

"What if" is only a dream,
I've seen these men and women give the supreme.
I've seen them die by a horrible Fate,
been injured...too much to contemplate.

What if I turned the tables for a few,
What if they were stopped by motorists at every turn,
while on their way to save you?

Would you then think the next time you see
an Emergency vehicle,
but for the grace of God,
it could be my loved one, my son or daughter,
my very own family,
"What if it were me?"

So please take heed when you hear those sirens,
give them room and let them pass by.
They are prepared to lay down their lives
for perfect strangers,
for you and I.

Give them space, let them roll,
with understanding, respect,
and Honor...above all.
