Odie is one of the key ingredients to this great cartoon. He appeared later on in the strip. His first appearance was on August 8th, 1978. Jon's friend Lyman dropped in unexpectedly and uninvited , brought Odie with him and stayed a few weeks, then left, totally leaving Odie behind! Odie's IQ is somewhere in the negitive digits. He gives the show Two Stupid Dogs a good name. And he drools on everything. Even though annoying at times, he is Garfield's best friend. |

I have been fortunate enough to find Odie's first comic strip. I am still working to find all of the character's first appearances. |

Odie came to be later on during the strip. Before Jim Davis even began to think of becoming a successful cartoonist, he was doing a commercial for a local car dealer-ship. One of the village idiot's name was Odie. When Jim was trying to think of a name for a really dumb mutt, Odie just stuck. Hence, a co-star is born. |
