| The Ghost in the Latrine | ||||
| Life in a military barracks can be fun but like everything you have to take the good with the bad. The bad in this case being something called the "detail". That is the assignment of jobs around the barracks. These jobs are rotated among all the people. No one liked to do these jobs but there was no choice. Some details were better than others and some could actually be frightening. I had been assigned to clean the latrine in the back part of the barracks. It was small, dark, old, and seldom used; so it should have been an easy chore. It consisted of three toilet stalls, one shower stall, one stall with an old fashioned clawfoot bathtub, and four small sinks and mirrors. There was one small window with frosted glass and it was nailed closed. One morning when I went to clean the latrine the wooden door to the first stall was locked from the inside. I knocked on the door and called out to see who was in there. No one answered so I looked under the door and no one was there. I had to crawl under the door to unlock it. Then I cleaned the stall and moved on to the next. That too was locked, I checked them all and they were all locked. Someone playing a little joke, I thought. It was really a pain crawling under all those doors but I did it. Needless to say I was not very happy by the time I finished. Before I left I gathered up the cleaning supplies and looked around to make sure that I hadn't forgotten anything. Everything was fine until I got to the last stall. The door was locked! I couldn't believe it! No one had come in and the locks on the doors were heavy metal with a bar the slide into a holder. There was no way that it could have fallen and locked itself. I thought it was really odd and went to get someone to check it out. As I stepped out of the latrine I heard a sound like a metal lock being moved. I turned around to see if someone was there. There in front of me was a ....... I don't know what. It had no shape at all and I could see right through it. It looked like a cloud. All the hairs on the back of my neck went straight up. It was suddenly very cold and I felt frozen in place. I wanted to screem but I couldn't open my mouth. Then just as suddenly as it appeared it was gone. The room was warm again and I went back into the latrine but nothing was there. I checked each of the stalls and they all openned easily even the last one. After that whenever I got that latrine detail I got a friend to come with me. We never did see anything but sometimes some of the stalls would be mysteriously locked and no one was there. |
