What If

I sit, pondering my own inanity.
Cursing my helplessness.
How I long for the world to be a better place
for my presence, here.

And then a stirring, at the edge of my mind.
Soft.
Likethe wings of a butterfly?
Thats IT!  My mind cries.
The Butterfly Effect.
Chaos Theory.
A laugh.
Butwhat if?

The theory goes something like this.
A butterfly flaps its wings in China.
In the chaotic motion of the atmosphere,
The disturbance created eventually changes
Large-scale atmospheric occurrences.
The result, a hurricane on the other side of the globe.
Again, a laugh.
Butwhat if?

My thoughts spin uncontrollably.
What if we are not so insignificant?
What if each of us holds a sort of power like that?
What if what we consider to be the smallest of contributions
Really do make a difference?
A casual smile proffered.
Words, spoken or penned.
A humble gift.
A simple act of kindness.
A helping hand.

Stumbling through mundane existence,
Perhaps we make more of a difference than we know.
Perhaps even that shirt, ironed
That knee bandaged
The neighbors newspaper plucked from the bushes and hand-delivered
Will set off a chain reaction.
One happening after another.
Some day to be part of the greatest change in atmosphere of all.
For all.

Perhaps not, but

What if?
